A note I found on my car.

My uncle is a quadriplegic and he has been driving for probably 10 years. Custom hand controls is very common for paralyzed individuals.

Am I missing something? Isn't a quadriplegic paralyzed in both arms and legs. How would he use hand controls? Did you mean paraplegic?

How can he drive if he was paralyzed from the waist down?

When I did Driver's Education at TWS with the Porsche club, there was usually a guy there with a late-model 928 with hand controls. He was a very good driver, and even did some instructing.

I can't remember exactly how it worked, but it looked similar to a motorcycle handle grip, on the left side, just inside the door, coming up, so that he would grab it like a joystick. If I remember correctly, it twisted (like the gas on a bike) and moved forward and back.

I never actually saw him using it on the track, so I don't know how that worked with having hands on the wheel while in a turn and so on.

Umm.. why would anyone be mad if he had the proper decal?

I feel that most NSX owners have the integrity not to falsely display handicap decals if that is what you are implying.

Also, parking in 2 spaces is like raising a flag asking someone to key your car.
I don't think we can assume good natures from people just because they own NSXs. I have bought and sold parts from Prime, and have encountered jerks, flakes, and some downright criminal( you know who you are!)
In fact, there are a lot of placards out there which should not have been issued. A lot of times, placards are abused. I constantly get requests from people that are not appropriate.
Taking 2 spaces is not right.

i dont drive my X to the gym i got to cuz some meathead might hate on it and do something stupid.

i don't wanna be paranoid all the time and don't wanna be jerk so i just leave the X at home unless i know im goin to a place with decent and safe parking lot.

people will think that you are arrogant too when you take to parking spots.

Would any one here be mad if you saw an NSX roll up into a handicapt spot, assuming he had the proper decal displayed?

First reaction is : If he can get in/out of a sportscar, you are not handicapped enough to have to park there in the first place. Dunno about how valid this reaction is, but imho that's what most people would think first.

You are right, but people dinging one's door and pretending nothing happened is not right either. In one case (2 parking spots) no harm is done to anyone, in the second case (dinged doors) you're left with a nice "souvenir" and the bill. In my case I ALWAYS take two spots, although I am considerate enough not to take the last two spots, OR the ones in front of a store. I ALWAYS park on two spots even if that's 50-100 yards away if I have to. No dings, no keyed doors, no "looks" from the others...

I agree, 2 spots is not rude, unless it's up front. If you have a car that's this nice and is worth more than the cars around you added up that last thing you need is some kids or rude a--hole opening their door into yours. Just try not to park close enough that it effects others, then the haters come a key'n.

I have the opposite reaction so far. I never take two spots and that is just asking for trouble. I try not to worry about getting any door dings as that would just make life too crazy. What I have found thus far is people in my area seem to take extra care when getting in or out of their cars when parked next to my NSX. So far I have not had any damage on my NSX. What I have noticed is that there are two main ways to get door dings. First is from people who are just plain clueless and doesn't even realize that they are hitting your car. The other way is by a malicious act. I've had both happen to me (Not the NSX) and the malicious act is aways more severe and more expensive to repair. The accidental door scrub often can be buffed out and many times doesn't even leave a dent. The malicious act aways leaves a big mark. Parking in two spots will probably avoid most accidental damage, but will one day result in malicious damage. Also, from what I have learned and observed over the years is people remember what cars take two spots. I've heard about cars that were repeatedly vandalized simple because other people thought he was a A-Hole for using two spots. There theory is if you are worthy enough to take two spots when everyone else takes one spot, you must be wealthy enough to afford the repairs.

Since so many people think taking two spots is indeed rude, even if some people don't I think the majority rules. It will be those peope who do think it's rude that will end up doing something malicious to your car.

When I took two spaces at church and two spaces at the mall I got one of those notes but mine had lots of nasty words in them.
The one at the mall even said my girlfriend is ugly. Weird.
Both places were practically empty when I parked but full when I came out. They parked about an 1/8 of an inch from me and must have exited through the passenger side. No dents and no scratches.

Malicious damage is one thing. But I think most parking lot dings are caused by people who are simply oblivious.

They could be kids, or adults who simply don't care or think about cars in the same way as enthusiasts do.

Therefore, I address this problem several ways.

1. I take usually take my daily driver (non-NSX) to the store/mall etc.

2. When I do take my NSX (or my Vette) to a safe parking lot, I go out of my way to park far away from the other cars. And, I look for a curb or edge so only one car will park next to me.

Oddly enough this happens a lot. Even though I'm parked out in the "boonies" some jerk occasionally feels the need to park right next to me - go figure.

I'm not sure why this is, but for this reason I NEVER take two places. People are weird in that they'll go out of their way to make a statement.

I've often thought of making inexpensive door guards too.

Hmm... Maybe you should put yourself in the other person's shoes. If you seen an exotic car taking up two spaces, and you in your POS can't seem to find a parking spot what would you feel/do? I would think that the owner thought to highly of himself and his car. I don't know if this unconsiderate act would warrant a door ding but, I would be pretty pissed off.

Then continue to roll the dice and check back with us in the future when you are asking for a good body shop. Parking in two spaces if rude. It is like going to the front of a long line.

Funny thing, it is considered rude to cut in front of somebody waiting in line, but nobody ever considers rude the fact of pulling in front of a car AND by doing so, oblige it to slow down. This intends to show that one cannot make such analogies.

I think that is rude as well. I was a track sprinter and in certain situations we could be DQed if we cut in front of another runner and broke his stride. I follow the same rules when I drive. I don't cut in front of people if it will make them hit their brake to slow down (Merging in bumper to bumper traffic is different). I let anyone going faster than me merge in front of me without any problem, however, I get pissed when someone cuts in front of me and makes me hit my brakes. Obviously many more people than I think cutting in front of cars and making them slow down is rude by all the road rage incidents. Everyday in morning and afteroon traffic you have people honking their horns and those such drivers.

I only take 2 spots at fast food resturants becuase you can always get a window seat and watch the car. Never take 2 spots if you will not be able to see your car for long periods of time.

Here is the way I look at it, if you take two spots because there are a lot of cars around and you can't find a good place to avoid them, you are probably asking for it as that extra spot will eventually become the last spot, thus making you look like a jerk.

If the lot isn't full at all, there are many good parking spots that give you a similar benefit of taking two spots, namely:

- The spot next to the handicapped spot (my favorite), usually there is a lot of room and most of the time that spot won't get taken anyway, if so, chances are that person is relatively careful getting out of their car, not to mention its up front where you can see it better from wherever you might be

- Spots next to a curb are great as you can hug the curb, creating more room for someone next to you to fling their door open without considering there may be other vehicles in its path

And for the record, when I park my Hummer I make double sure that I am not parked in an offensive way, it's truly amazing the way people love/hate the Hummer, it's really no different on overall girth than a Navigator/Tahoe/Suburban/Expedition/Etc., yet there are some real haters out there.

I agree. I use the islands, spots next to handicap spot, or an area where there are no lines at all, but away from traffic flow. Sometimes I spend more time finding a spot, than it takes me to run in to the store! :D

But all of this effort pays off. I went for 5 years on my previous car and not 1 scratch or ding. (55k miles)

My friend just bought his first brand new car in his life and always parked in regular spaces. He had his first ding on day 3!
