A Better Alternative to a totally redesigned NSX

hmmm... the 96-03 RL 3.5litre motor was longitudinal mounted. The redesigned '04 (or '05?) RL has a tranverse mounted motor; I am not positive of it's displacement, 3.5litre I had presumed.

For reference, the NSX has a transverse mounted mid-engine rearwheel drive powerplant.

I am not the most tech savvy guy either, but if the RL has a 3.5L V6 with 300HP, I see not reason why they couldn't tool around with it to get 350HP for the 06-07 NSX.

Nonetheless, the HSC showcar had a transverserly mounted 3.5L V6 if I recall correctly. I bet it was the motor from the RL.

uhh, yea...so?

Civics & Integra's share the same platform. If you're sayin' the 3.5RL motor is in the same league as the 3.0/3.2NSX motor, you don't know much about the NSX. You didn't properly read my post, I said same car manufacturer NOT same car/model line.

Call me a snob, but I would not any mass-produced derived engine in a future NSX or NSX successor. To me, one of the cool things about the NSX is how everything was specially designed for this car. The engine is an excellent example: handbuilt by Honda’s best, not based on an existing engine (and still available exclusively in the NSX), titanium rods, unique design, etc.

Of course Honda could take the RL’s 3.5L, add a couple cams, bump-up the power, and stick it in the NSX. That does not mean they should. If they are going to something, it should be done right - design an engine worthy of the rest of car, even if it means waiting a while.

An RL engine on the NSX??

No way , I would rather have less HP and a bullet proof engine that was intended to be the top of the line engine, rather than a generic engine from the RL. Let's see having the same engine that is on my MDX on the NSX.. yeah right..

Do you guys know why the Nissan 240SX sucked so much in the US trim? Because the Marketing department decided that the US market was more after torque rather than HP, and they decided to drop a truck engine on the car, go figure..

Developing a High Performance Engine takes time and it should not be a hacked up job :(

Ken

BTW: Comparing the 1.5L and 1.6L engine upgrades is a very different story, the engine that is being used to replace the 1.5L and 1.6L engines is higher performance as well as proven engines. The same can't be said about the engine on the RL, LOL..

I completely agree :D

enzo's nightmare meets Sochiro's nightmare...

hmmm... Still waiting to see a Ferrari powerplant swapped into a Fiat... or vice versa, I should say!

Remember that all new honda engines rotate in the opposite direction starting with the S2000. Installing the 3.5L RL engine is not a simple swap and would likely require flipping the engine 180 so it sits on the left side of the engine bay or redesigning the transmission to reverse the rotation.

I did not mean put the RL engine in the NSX in its current form. I meant start with the 3.5 L V6. Then work the NSX magic on it. DOHC, titanium connecting rods, etc. etc. Thereby getting 350-375HP and an 8500 RPM redline :)

350hp for 06~07 will only improve the sells abit........simply look at all the sports cars will be offer by TOYOTA, NISSAN or CHEVY totally redesign with nothing less than 450hp. so 350hp, old body style and same price for 06~07? I don't think so.....

BTW, toyota(Lexus) to Unveil Exotic Sports Car Concept Vehicle at NAIAS 1/9/05. http://www.carspyshots.net/zerothread?id=12387

That was my question - Are the RL engine and the NSX engine from the same family? It appears that the answer is no, but if they are, then it could be a viable swap. Even if the rotation is different that's not too big a deal as long as the block is the same / similar. Putting the NSX heads on the 3.5L bottom end would get you the correct rotation.

As for the NSX engine being specifically designed for it, that's wrong. The current motor has it's roots in a pedestrian car as well.

Maybe not in a Fiat but in a Lancia (same thing :) ) :

Officially done by Lancia/Fiat/Ferrari, called the Lancia Thema Ferrari, used the 328 engine.
