850 rpm Idle ???

The factory idle speed seems a bit excessive to me. I would think a 650 idle would work just fine. Has any one had any success in cranking down the normal operating temp idle speed ? I have the factory shop manual and know how to do it but would prefer some first hand experience before I go messing around. Feedback________________?

Is there a reason you're second guessing the best engineers Honda ever had? What could you possibly gain by doing this? Bad idea -IMO.

You may have problems trying to reduce your idle, raising it would be less of an issue unless you have a stand-alone ECU running your car. The OEM ECU uses an idle air bypass to adjust the idle to match a programmed RPM target, there is a mechanical adjustment to the the throtle plate to allow for adjustment in case the idle air bypass cannot supply enough air to maintain a programmed idle.

I think the problem you will have as you lower the idle with the mechanical adjustment the computer will add air from the idle air bypass and the idle will return to the programmed idle, you can keep doing this untill you reach the limit that the device can bypass air but this will prevent you from having a high idle at cold start, you will most likely have cold start issues, it will take longer for the car to warm up, and you may end up with a check engine light for idle circuit failure.

My question is why do you think 800-850rpm is too high for an idle?

Keep in mind this is a small displacement V6 with less rotating mass than say a big block V8 so it will be a rough idle compared to almost any V8 at say 650 RPM idle. There will be little to no advantage in fuel cost or mechanical wear either. But i suppose if you wanted to do it you would need to have your ECU socketed and a chip burned with a new target idle RPM programmed.

Some of these Ideas people are coming up with lately are off the chain.

can i targa my coupe NSX?

I can SAWZAW my Shocks off?

If i use 87 LEADED GAS will i get better performance out of my engine?

what if I unplugged 2 of my Coil packs will the car now run as a 4 cyl and better gas mileage?

I wanna put a 1976 VW dashboard in my NSX has anyone tried this before?

If I removed my Bose speakers and put in some JVC MARINE/Boat water proof speakers would they sound better?

When I turn the steering wheel it’s harder than usual my tires are completely flat could that be the problem?

I used tranny fluid in my windshield wiper fluid tank, my buddy told me to try it out it cleans the windshield wiper pumps seals.

When driving with my targa off I hear wind noise is there a Honda recall on this issue?

when I do a search for installing an aftermarket Oil filter the search comes back with nothing.

while driving at 120 I keep getting speeding tickets has anyone had this problem and should I get a lawyer?

I mean its making Prime look bad.

I think when they ask a stupid question we should give them a stupid answer. lets bring Prime back to the top.

or are we selling these NSX’s so cheap that the average American can buy them now?

Shawn I was just going to ask if anyones installed a toe hitch. I have a trailer and a john deer. Was thinking about mowing some lawns for some extra money this summer. Or hauling metal to the scrap yard...

I too thought the idle was a little excessive. So I went ahead and did a steam powered conversion. Idle is no longer necessary, but people have a dumbfounded look when I'm sitting at the light thinking I'm purging my NOS when the safety valve starts venting.

Dirtbag,

funny, I was thinking of doing a Steam Engine conversion, you beat me to it. the torque you could get out of that that would be impressive.

and the Putting a trailer hitch on the back of the NSX is even better.
someone needs to do a PhotoShop pic of this just for a Visual.

does anyone have any others they might want to share?

this is getting good.

how about a Jet Fighter Control stick mounted on the floorboard of the driver. remove the steering wheel and hook up cables to actuall turn the steering when the stick is moved left or right.

and convert the e-brake into a pitch/yaw for your rear dampers so as to get the rear to come up and make you feel like your in a Helicopter in forward motion

shawn,i was wondering if you really have to change your muffler belts every 7 years? i've never seen one break (or actually seen one at all)

Sooooo, whom was this directed towards?

Indeed the questions and "actions" keep getting weirder lately.
why would you want to lower your stationery rpm that's beyond pointless.

We all agree its getting bad.

some stuff is understandable,

but some of this daily stuff is beyond reason and logic

What the devil is that?

DDozer----Dave, thanks for your answer. You give me the feedback I was looking for---ie a technical answer to an honest question from a new owner.
The NSX may have had Honda's best engineers but they also managed to produce a defective upper transmission housing due to poor manufacturing, a weak window lift due to nylon thingy's, a poor design on the window lift motor transmission, poor amplifiers on the bose speakers, door handles that break, etc. So there is no shortage of things that can be done to tweek the NSX to improve it's design-performance.

For those who felt the need to insult my question, my financial ability to afford an NSX, where I live and or my relative intellegence----sorry you felt you had to drop to that level. You sure know how to give a relative new guy a friendly welcome.:frown:

Ok, so maybe we were a little rough on a new guy. Don't give up on us because most of the guys here will help you most of the time, and there's a wealth of knowledge here. But help us to understand what you could possibly gain by reducing your idle RPM?
Happy Motoring!

+1 on that

even though Any member of Prime will help you with questions, we have to have a little fun on the new guys.

dont take in personal

got any pics of your ride? we all love pics.

and about the issues with the NSX, you can name off POOR engineering on any vehicle

The idle speed is typical of most Honda's. Depending on the year, it can be near impossible to lower it, even if you wanted to. (DBW, 1995+ it is not going to happen easily, or reliably. Personally I think 650RPM idle may be godd for an 8 cylinder, but for a 6 cylinder, I think 850RPM is OK.

It may just be the way it is buttt it just seems a bit fast to me compared to the 100+ other cars I've owned. Perhaps it picked up a little speed when the SoS clutch was installed replacing the steel flywheel with the lighter weight aluminum one?!? This swap created faster spoolup but also resulted is quicker spooldown rpms. It is noticeable when speed shifting---you loose some of the momentum of the rps if not careful.

It just kind of reminds me of a vehicle that has the mechanical choke closed and it is racing. The tach shows it to read approx 850. Thus, my question.
I don't care about the fuel used etc. It's more of a gut feeling that the engine is racing unnecessarly based on 50+years of head under hood and hearing etc. I honestly can't remember any other vehicle with a 850rpm idle-----. But, based on the technical feedback I've received-(Dave etc.) -I will probably just leave it as is till I can see, feel, listen to another NSX for comparison. Now if the spec is 800 +- 500, then I might be able to drop it to 750-775 and get away with that---hummm. May just give that a try to see what happens as it will still be in spec. Will advise~~~~Huck

As noted above the idle speed is not adjustable. Sure you can mess with the bypass screw and get it lower but as soon as you change the load on the engine (ac, headlights, rear window defog) the rpm will change. One of the great things with the ECU controling the idle the RPM stays rock solid. I think that is really what is bothering you, you know you should hear a change when you turn somthing on and you don't.
