2007 Mustang GT Vs. 1991 NSX: RESULTS!

2007 Mustang GT Vs. 1991 NSX

After some silly office banter and a few small bets, we decided to make this happen. On a CLOSED, PRIVATE strip, I’m going to race a friend in his manual Mustang GT. We tossed around a few ideas, but came to the conclusion that we would do straight a 40mph-125mph run. I’m hoping that the NSX’ strong midrange and lighter weight will be able to compensate against the mustangs’ bigger engine and higher rated hp. We’re both stock, except for my Ark DT-S exhaust. Oh, I’m running stock 15/16 wheels with brand new rubber. I tried to get him to come out to a track event for some twisties, but he’s smarter than that.

We will be wearing helmets and not driving closely side-by-side.

Predictions?

Have someone about 2/3rds the way down with a video camera. I want to see this. If you lose you are banned from Prime,LOL. Good luck.

if you both are are stock, it should be a very close race. ( on a closed course of course =P )

Lighter weight = better acceleration at lower speeds. The higher you go up in speed, the less weight matters and the more power matters. You would be better off starting from naught to 125 (as Jeremy Clarkson would say) than from forty. Good luck and try to get a video. I will post one soon of my car and an MB E-55 AMG.

Try removing things that you don't need, like spare tire, tools, etc. Also, race on almost empty. Gas weights a lot.

Good luck,

Try removing things that you don't need, like spare tire, tools, ...

... the passenger seat, interior trim, wipers, CD player, drain the washer reservior ...

Why do I get so wrapped up in these things? I'm really pulling for you. Go, man, go!

Edit: Don't forget the engine cover.

And any excess cat hair that maybe on the engine cover.

^ inside joke...

If you want to be hardcore, you can pull out the stereo, all the speakers, the bumper beams, cats, etc. etc. :)

I have only raced one car and it happened to be my buddy's 5.0 mustang (on a closed private course). He was auto but had headers and full exhaust, intake, MAF and other misc. upgrades. Anyhow, my other buddy's truck couldn't tick off 1/4 mile so we did .3 instead. From the dead stop, I pulled 2-3 lengths on him easily if not more. He crept up to 2 lengths by the time we cross the line and claims he was creeping up on me but doubted that he could ever catch me even in a longer run since we were nearing his governor very quickly.

My suggestion, take him from a dig.

Oh yeah, do it in the DAYTIME or atleast with the flip ups down. The flip ups add ALOT of drag. It hurts my top speed runs by as much as 10 mph.

On a goofy note, tape up the front turn signals, the radiator openings lol. Oh, yeah use the stock pizza cutters if you have good rubber on them. Less weight to sling around and less width to catch the air. Oh and no passengers. Our cars are sensitive to weight it seems. Mine feels slow with a passenger next to me, unless she's a skinny hotty. Then the weight isn't much of an issue. This means no BIG girls or dudes like 150+ lbs. Windows up, the wind drag also hurts alot.

u'll do just fine.
i'ts not like your racing a c6 Vette or something better

I've never even seen any mustang pull anywhere near me even the highly modified ones... you will roast him.

And like Turbo said, do it from a dead stop. Turn off your TCS - You might want to practice your launching technique though! Good luck! TAKE VIDEO!

I would recommend you start at a higher speed.

The NA1 NSX 5-speed is geared very tall. First gear goes to 45 MPH.

45 MPH in 2nd gear is around 4400 RPM. This is below the NSX powerband. The car bogs down a bit until you pass 50 mph.

Changing to short gears, with the same 1st gear ratio but a shorter 2nd gear ratio, keeps the NSX in the powerband. That change alone saves about .2-.3 seconds in a 0-60 run.

If you start at 40 MPH, you will be well out of the powerband and the Mustang will pull harder until you get the RPM up.

If you really want to have the advantage, start at 60 MPH.

Run from a dig (i.e. from a stop). Starting at 40mph hands him a big advantage (removes the need for him to have to deal with throttle modulation to launch a torquey V8 properly).

I say make it a real race and run it from zero to winner or don't bother doing it at all. I use to race all of the time and i always hated it when people started making rules up about how they wanted to race. It seems like you've gone through allot of trouble to set this up, you mine as well do it right.

Plus, if you do win it won't shut your buddy or coworkers up anyway because you'll have the "we'll we started at 40 ....".

Mother in law has a 07 Mustang GT, if you lose, you have to wear the "LOSER" button at every midwest meet:biggrin: You shouldn't have a problem.

Go Go Go!!!!

My advice is floor it, drive straight, don't crash.

But if you're gonna smoke em, smoke em good!

Loser has to put a note on their rear window that says "I got smoked by a Ford" or "I got smoked by a Honda", depending on who wins.

You'll do just fine racing against a RUSTang  Hell, I raced against a Suzuki GSXR on Highway 1 in Monterey,CA going at 60mph before dropping the hammer. Eventually the gixxer slowly passed me up but that's because we ran out of road

If you know how to launch the car well, TSC Off, probably from 4K-4500 RPM's you will leave him. Good advice about gas. Keep it low.

You'll probably win, but I guess we'll find out. The 4.6L V8 seems asthmatic and has a poor throttle response, but that was my impression.

You cannot possibly lose ths race. The Mustang isn't putting down more than 240 to the wheels assuming a reasonable drivetrain loss of 20% and the car weighs over 3,500 pounds.

The OPs NSX, with exhaust, likely has a small hp advantage and weighs 500 lbs less not to mention the obvious flatter torque curve improving overall acceleration efficiency.

A rolling start from 40 mph will eat the Mustang alive. 2nd gear in the NSX is brutal and will take it all the way to 81. The Mustang will have shifted twice already at that point. Third gear will end this race as you'll get to 114 and with only 11 more mph to go there will be no time for the Mustang to catch up (not that it even would).

i would say that we would have more of an advantage from a higher speed roll. the frontal area of the stang is huge, and the aerodynamics sucks with its backwards thinking design.

a stock mustang GT will never hit 168 mph stock like our cars can. they'll have a hard time doing 155mph.
