2004 Acura NSX Changes

I read somewhere that the irony of the exotic cars is that since the volume is so low, they may go 10 years without a major change, while the much, much, less expensive (but higher volume cars) get all the latest technology every year. I guess the NSX is a classic example of that.

Even utilizing 'dated' technology, a 10+ year old NSX can still outperform most higher volume cars on the road today.

I am in the not-angry camp. Only a dramatic overhaul of the design would generate a significant catalyst in sales. Even the 2002 facelift did very little for sales. If I were Honda, I'd rather invest my dollars in the overhaul effort, rather than the maintenance of the current platform. Its all about bang for the buck.

Incremental changes to the existing platform do not tarnish the legacy of our vehicles. My advice is to chill out and wait for the 2005 model.

Did anyone think that perhaps the two small changes (instrument panel & shift knob) were not done as an investment, but rather because they ran out of the current parts and decided instead to use something from the parts bin? I would guess that this is more likely than the possibility that they actually spent money to have someone develop new parts for the 2004 model.

This seems unlikely. I don't think parts simply "run out," making it necessary to replace them with a different design (we can still get most parts for our 1991 NSXs, right?). In most cases, I think the supplier would be able to produce some more. As far as I can tell, past changes appear to be improvements rather than replacements for unavailable parts. We're talking about Honda, not GM.

It's the instrument panel surround that's claimed to be redesigned... So, I'm thinking of something along the lines of what was done in the Zanardi (opposed to sticking a instrument panel from an RSX in the NSX, for example).

I wonder if they will get rid of the analogue odometer?? -- that makes it look dated..

You could be right, but keep in mind that they sell very few parts seperately compared to the volume of cars that are sold, especially parts such as an instrument surround.

In fact, I would bet the reason for the 2 options becoming standard is that they have CD changers and Keyless entry kits left over and want to get rid of as many as they can before they change to the new model. Everyone seems to think having features standard is better, but all that means is that you have no choice and are forced to purchase them -- I'm sure they are not giving them for free. I would bet the MSRP of the '04 will increase to $91k to accomodate those 2 items.

I was expecting nothing, and we get something so inconsequential.
So what's wrong with that?

No, given that no one was expecting changes, it's more like being a server at McDonald's and getting a penny for a tip.

Just wanted to make a quick retort to the earlier requests for upgraded brakes. They can't just slap on a set of Brembos and call it good. This requires a complete re-tune of the traction control and ABS. This is no small task (trust me I'm an ABS engineer) and usually takes 1-3 years. Some companies have tried to offer brake "upgrades" without paying for the re-work and have ended up with longer stopping distances - now that wouldn't look so good for Honda's most expensive car, would it?

Personally, I was hoping the NSX would go on hiatus until (and if) there is a redesign. I think it is kind of discouraging to see it continue unchanged for 04/05 as the competition is going to be getting even rougher soon with the C6, 997, SRT10 (already here)and (most likely) Infiniti GTR due any minute. Not to mention the new M3, new M5, possible M6 and the endless parade of ultra high HP AMG Benzes.

I think Honda would have been better off ending the NSX with the 03 year and bringing it back when ready in a totally new form.

I can't say I'm surprised though. I would have bet money after the facelift that the car was going to stick around for a while.

The only benefit I see for a 2004 NSX is that there will be more great lease opportunities... It is damn hard to beat $799! From the sound of it, there are only 2 2003 NSX's even left..

I didn't see any new pictures in that doc. They are the same pictures released for the 2002 model.

EDIT: typo correction

Thank you for confirming that. I couldn't get the document to download through my proxy at work (and wasn't sure I wanted to with all the worms going around anyway).

BTW, there are some new MS Office security updates just posted within the past couple of days:

Be careful out there.

Interior pics are definitely the same as 02-03, no new shift knob and instrument panel surrounds.

What is the instrument panel surround anyway? Is it just the part that goes around the vents/ac and radio?
