What took me 8 hrs there to trouble shoot should take you 1 hr.
We went step by step through the book.
BTW, they only charged me the standard pre smog check inspection fee to figure this out.
They also can pre test on their dyno. But- the...
Yes, some how the Idiots of our state think a 94 must run cleaner than a 91 even though they are mechanically the same....
Thats how it was a few years ago. Anyone here from Orange County care to post your recent numbers?
I average 1000 miles a year in this car for the past 8 yrs.
Tree...
To wrap my fiasco up and maybe help other members, here is my pre EGR solenoid replacement test.
Post EGR solenoid replacement test. (Plus cleaning EGR valve and pipe)
The solenoid valve. Note this part is NLA but a suitable 94 Acura part can be used if you cut the wires and use the NSX...
The electric EGR valve tested SAT. And yes a vampire pump is used for the test.
There is a solenoid valve controlled by the eng mgt system that opens & closes at different times allowing
the EGR system to function. (re-direct gasses back through engine)
Using the manual its about the 10th thing...
Turns out my EGR solenoid valve is the problem. Will have a new one Fri & test again.
Not an easy thing to trouble shoot. Am lucky to have the full shop manual.
Smog parts are also not easy to find for these cars and most are discontinued by Honda with no aftermarket. Like this NSX only...
Agree, I am taking my 60k cream puff to the referee station in SD Fri.
Will see what they say. It seems the requirements have surpassed the orig design spec's,
Found out today the EGR valve does not open up until around 2500 rpm.
The engine mgt smog equip is not really even in use at 15 mph in 2nd gear turning 1500 rpm. (Think tall 2nd gear in 91-94's)
I called around and have got nothing but folks telling me they are trying to get these older cars off...
I did change my sensor with a new one. Big improvement but needed HC (PPM) 81 or less and got a 91. That was on 7/21/12. On 7/20/12 you needed 80 or less.
You see, these numbers change from day to day.
NO (PPM) MAX is 684 I am at 765. This is 15 mph in 2nd.
I pass no problem at 25 mph in 2nd...
Orange county has stricter numbers than other county's.
Compared my test from 2 yrs ago and the Max numbers are now lower.
They think these cars improve emissions with age I guess.
Run a test at 15 mph in 2nd gear at 1500 rpm and what do you know?
The car cant do it. I have 64k on my car and it...
Thats where I go.....Last few yrs now.
But 2 yrs ago he could test in 1st gear at 15 mph.
Only so much he can do.
This gear change to 2nd at 15 mph is a big deal.
I am in the same boat in So Cal. Pulled mine after I failed today. It was oily but not fouled. New one is on the way.
Another issue in Calif. is we used to be able to test in 1st and 2nd gear. Now its 2nd gear only.
Another bummer, while 91-94's are about the same, 94's have to meet a higher...
Am looking at a silver Hot wheels HSC I bought in 2005.
6 years later here we are, still 2+ yrs out.
I hope things go well for this car, just seems to me the world is passing by and this car just sits.
Not sure how long I will keep my 94. But so far nothing else really interests me. Is that so...
"I worst fear while driving my nsx around.. is seeing a Z06 pull next to me!! after knowing what my Z06 can do on the streets.."
Done worry, just give the 65 year old bald guy a thumbs up, and putt off in your NSX. The last thing on his mind is a street race.
Ave 3968 per yr since new.
750 yr since I have owned it.
300 mi in the past 2 yrs......
The silly 90 M3 is getting all the miles these days......
NSX= 63,500 total.
Looking for a brand new set of factory Cats for my 94.
Don't want to pay dealer price.
Found lots of sets with lots of miles.
Looking for a brand new, or super / silly low miles pair.
No rush, these are for down the road.
Thanks!
Passed today no problem.
But can anyone tell me why the same exact engine and emissions equip has different standards for different years? Just look at the 91 test, then the 94 standards?
Just seems lame to me, asking the same engine to meet different standards depending on the year it was...
Hate to dig up an old thread...... But my 94 didnt pass. It would however have passed the 91's test. Check the numbers. Why does my 94 have to burn so much cleaner to pass? Some seafoam and booster should do the trick.
But the numbers between the 91 and 94 and not even close.....
Thanks!
1994...
Good folks over there too.
Car guys are all almost all good.
Here is a post when I went from the Vette to the NSX.
(was in the market for the 94 at the time)
