***STICKY*** NC1 Oil Pump Failures

My teen years were full of dry sumps...

Please keep us posted, mine was able to start up a few times but started smoking after all that happened, towed home, tried to pull it into the garage and that’s when the motor locked up.

My motor seemed locked up at first until it shot the crank position out the side of the motor after all the extra oil came out car turned over no problem.

replaced crank position sensor and fired up no problem just kept filling the crank case up with oil .

I think your engine maybe repaired. That crank position sensor probably shot out due to crankcase pressure caused by all the oil backing up in the dry sump basin. I would remove and inspect the dry sump pumps and check for wear on the rotors and housing also check any filter strainers along path for restrictions.

Did your engine blow?
No its running good... When this oil reaches 3,000 miles I'll post the oil sample results... My warranty expires June of 2026 so I may drive it a bit more till then... I Don't want it to fail after the warranty expires... You think Acura will let me pay for another warranty extension?.. I sure will ask them via email....

Well folks, I said it a long time ago. You don't want to own this car without a warranty. When I was going through my Lemon Law issue, there were two other NC1's with oil pump failures down here in S. Florida. And that was five years ago.

I don't read the NC1 category, so FWIW - Just spoke with my dealer a bit (parts and service). They only service around a half dozen NC!'s and haven't heard of this issue. As an aside they are replacing all the crank bearings on certain MDX's due to a vendor change that went bad, but they are extending the warranty period of these cars by 8 years! (i assume only for that issue). So i would expect them to do something similar if NC1's are failing. Or perhaps not. Confirmed car has 9 drain plugs, takes 6 hours for an oil change and it's quite a bitch to get to some of them. Further stated most of the overall Acura issues they see regularly are computer related. What a surprise - not.

Seems relevant to question what oil to use other than the mobil 1 euro seems to be typical.

Ultra platnium 0w-40? Amsoil 0w-40?

I'lll miss the box'o m1 oil from walmart, but oh well.

I wonder if we need a dedicated thread to discuss this? Would probably be beneficial to the community.

I'm not on FB , but Mike if you can convince some of that group to post here of failures, and whether stock or modded and how Corporate dealt with it, that would be awesome.

I actually just got FB, still navigating how to use it. From what I can see, it's a few 2017's that seem to have been affected.

I'm keeping fingers crossed that they sorted out a drysump weakness before the 22's...

Also if everybody can post VIN# . Let's hope that we don't have snap dry sump situation. My 2017 #33 with 52k miles ethanol injection,JB4,sprint booster, downpipes ,exhaust, was tracked many times and runs great.

I went to my dealer one day to get a part around late 2018 and they had a Red slightly used NC1 on the showroom floor. As i didn't expect to see this - made my heart skip a beat. They were asked $159 but i think i could have purchased it for 20k less. They didn't offer to let me drive it which was a little off-putting as i had sponsored them for the 2014 NSXPO. If i had driven it -who knows if i would have tapped the retirement account. Never would have dumped my 92 though.

I can re-title this thread and make it a sticky so owners can all post here if everyone wants.

I'd say that's a great idea, maybe include a poll if possible. Might help track this.

Honcho, beyond worthy of the Prime title, "Legendary Member and Tech Expert!"

Hoping this is a few isolated incidents on some 2017's.

I can't believe Cosworth didn't put a screen on the pump inlet. That's race car stuff where you're tearing the engine down every season. On a production car, it's like obvious! Even the VTEC solenoids on the C30 have screens!

Can they come out with some sort of a retro fit? I'd imagine it's gotta be beyond labor intensive.

Looks like I be rocking quiet mode for ever...
