***STICKY*** NC1 Oil Pump Failures

Guys I have a 2017 Acura NSX with 59k miles on it.. She has always had oil changes done at the local Acura dealership... I have owned the car for 3 years now and had no issues other than a leaking left axle.. There has been no modifications done to the car. After driving it the other day it sounded like a big clunk came from the rear of my car and all ignition lights came on, it would not even let me go in electric mode. It got towed to the dealership and they have looked at it for the last week and have told me the engine has seized!!!!! WTH !!!! Where do I stand with Acura on this?? The car does have a prior rebuilt title from a small front end collisions 5 years ago when she had 11k mile on it and way before my time.. I just don't understand why a NSX with plenty of oil and regular service would have catastrophic engine failure.. I'm really sad right now
Please help on any advise
Regards
Stuart
Were you able to figure what caused this to happen? Manufacturing defect or some weak point in the engine?

Yikes, any update?
Picked up a used motor, going to tear apart the old engine further and figure out what destroyed the oil pump

Well this is certainly alarming, so we have 2 confirmed engine failures.

There were 12 done just last year at dealerships that I know of and Acura is definitely keeping this as a hush hush.. They have been plagued with this exact issue on many of their Acura RDX's from 2017 and on to the fact there is a class action lawsuit against them!! Unfortunately the NSX is not produced in high enough numbers to gain traction for a lawsuit like that..

Yes pacific motors in Michigan. Turboautoparts.com I found also has engines as well and I believe you can finance them. I will keep everyone up to date as soon as I can
How many miles were on your car that failed? and was it a 2017? and were there any modifications done to the car? Just curious .

more reasons to stay completely oem and let dealer do all work..

Acura is forsure keeping the lid on the engine failures. The only place you will find anything about failures is from the technicians that had to pull and replace them.I urge folks to do oil analysis, you may catch any issues early or use that as evidence for warranty claims/ reimbursement if you had to pay out of pocket.

Thanks for posting these pictures. That will keep me up at night. My car is making bad noise for fraction of second at cold start since day one. It will be hard to tell what went first. Was it something in the engine or the pump went first? Good luck. Please keep us posted. We should keep bumping this tread that the word spreads around.

It’s a 2017. Just touched 20k miles. It has sos down pipes and Ktuner. Was on e40 blend for a month or so before everything happened. Tore into the motor today a little and piece of oil control ring was found on the head do it’s very confusing why/how it could even end up there. Also examined the oil pump and for some reason, cosworth never put a screen by the savaging part of pump which for a 150k motor, it’s ridiculous. Pretty much anything large will be able to go into your oil pump and damage it before it would reach into the oil filter.

Also wondering if the Ktuner had something to do with detonation, and if it didn’t account for altitude etc. always had spot on e40 as well

So 3 motors to date here? Tough to blame a tuner like many manufactures do.

I can understand turning their back on a Salvage or Buyback car but one a bone stock engine simply fails, it's concerning.

Hi guys I’m pretty much in the same boat here ! I was on the highway doing a pull , car felt a little jerky up top I let off and poooofff be cloud of smoke behind me and dash lit up like a Christmas tree.Towed the car home tried to crank and felt like it was struggling to turn over ended up shooting the crank position sensor out the side of the block from too much oil build up in the crank case. I replaced the sensor drained all the oil and filled with new oil restarted the car it turned on without issue but About 30 seconds later started smoking pretty bad I rechecked oil level the tank was empty again so the oil isnt returning to the scavenge reservoir, so leads me to believe my scavenge pump isn’t scavenging the oil from the block. I’m hoping my motor is good at the very least my car has been down for about 1.5 years . Getting ready to pull the motor soon . I had intentions on rebuilding the oil pump but it seems Acura decided to discontinue the parts to rebuild the pump so that’s where im pretty much stuck in my tracks !

Sorry to hear about your engine. Thank you for posting this and please keep us informed about your progress. I know that parts listed as discontinued on some web sides are available . What year, mileage and modifications your car have ?

In for first K swap....:poop:

Please keep us posted, mine was able to start up a few times but started smoking after all that happened, towed home, tried to pull it into the garage and that’s when the motor locked up.

All stock?

I'm the second owner of my #854 and the engine was pulled to replace the oil pump assembly (15100-58G-A01) by the Acura Dealership due to multiple oil leaks discovered during an inspection........ that was before the vehicle hit 500 miles in April 2018....... I didn't know that before I bought it in April 2021 at 6,522 miles till after I looked at the maintenance history...…. I bought a 5yr/80,000 mile warranty from Acura in June 2021....... I currently have 17,307 miles, three oil changes as well as three oil samples and the engine is wearing good.... from 5440-6522 miles the iron was 7ppm..... but Iron doubled to 15ppm from 6,522-11,924 miles.... Blackstone Labs said this sample might relate to the the Thin Viscosity (10.54cSt @100C / 61.1 SUS @ 210F) Or The Engine Might Have A Tendency To Shear Down Its Oil.... from 11,924-15,160 miles I extracted 1.5qt of oil from the oil tank and added 1.5qt fresh 0W-40 Mobil 1 ESP after the end of the day drive.... it took about 22qts and about 15 extractions to replace 90% of the oil Without removing the 7 drain plugs.... after the 15th extraction I replaced the Oil filter Assembly and sent in another sample.... Iron ppm went back down to 7 and Blackstone said the oil is Barely Used..... but the 0W-40 Mobil 1 viscosity is still low, like a 30W oil..... so at 15,512 miles I did a complete 7 plug drain oil change with oil filter, but this time I'm using Driven Racing DI40 (5W-40)..... DI40 is suppose to stay up in the 40W viscosity range and not shear down to a 30W like Moble-1 0W-40 does.... DI40 also has a lower Calcium ppm of 1300 while Mobil-1 has close to 3000 ppm that leads to a Low Speed Pre Ignition (Engine goes kaBoom) in Direct Injected Gas Engines....... I'll send in the DI40 sample at 18,512miles..... Guess who manufactures Acura 0W-40 pn 08798-9080 for the NSX?!...... Mobil-1.....

Did your engine blow?

Thankyou for your sharing your situation hopefully as people come forward Acura can be held accountable and shine some light on the situation.
Acura wont sell the parts to rebuild the scavenge pump or oil pump because they are close tolerances between the rotor and aluminum housing . Mixing and match used parts will change the tolerances and affect its pump ability. The other failures I have heard about also involved the oiling system and afew from the scavenging pump specifically. Unfortunately when dry sump systems work they work great but when they fail its always catastrophic.
