You Have Mail

I have seen several times where someone reponds to a thread with the words "You Have Mail".

This always strikes me as odd, here is why.

Let's assume that someone posted a reply to a thread and logged off soon thereafter. Somebody else reads the thread and sends that person a private e-mail, but also posts to the forum "You Have Mail".

Why?

The next time the first person logs on, their e-mail software will automatically prompt them to check e-mail. Furthermore, not everyone goes back to visit old threads, so it is a moot point to tell them what they already know.

Is there something I'm missing?

I suspect that many people use a web-based email provider. The web-based email account may require the user to actively check the account to discover that they have a message. It's possible that new forum post will prompt them to check their email.
