I don't think this is considered an R comp by Yokohama, although this line of R compound is really starting to blur. What is considered an R compound anymore and what is "street"? Is it the UTQG rating of 140 by the Euro standard?

Good point. AFAIK there is no "official" designation for what is, or isn't, a street tire or a track (R compound) tire.

Although the Tire Rack doesn't represent anything official, most of us consider the tires they designate as "extreme performance" to be street tires, and the tires they designate as "track and competition" to be R compounds.

It's becoming a foggy line is all I am saying. We use the term "R compound" but I am not even sure what that means anymore.

If you spin backwards into the guard rail at the same speed that you have been taking the same turn wearing NT01s then it wasn't an R Comp.

Really, the only thing we have to go on is testing, word of mouth experiences and tread wear ratings.

I noticed that the Tire Rack has broken down their former single category of "Track and Competition" into four categories:

  • Dry Racetrack & Autocross Only
  • Wet Racetrack & Autocross Only
  • Streetable Track & Competition
  • Drag Racing Radials
Just to add further fuel to the blurring of performance categories, of course. And I should add, I can sympathize with the need to split out a category for faster-wearing track tires like the ones that only have a couple of circumferential tread grooves (e.g. Hoosier R6) vs those with enough tread that can last long enough to be driven to the track. But even if you do that, I would have expected the Toyo RA-1 to be in the "Streetable Track & Competition" category, whereas Tire Rack put it into the non-streetable "Dry Racetrack & Autocross Only" category. Just sayin'. ;)

TireRack acknowledges that the RA1 is streetable and folks use it to/from track but to avoid liability with wet surface (hence why they specify dry) they have opted to focus on the R888 for streetable option. According to them, the RA1 has a softer compound hence faster lap times but the R888 will last longer. AIM seems to offer a slightly better review for the R888! YMMV

I run the RA1's for both track and street. They wear very well for an R compound and are super sticky on the track.

Will check these out as I just bought the AD08 a couple thousand kilometers ago and they're the best tires I have ever owned.

I agree to date the AD08 is the best tire I have had on my NSX

I feel the same way about the new Dunlop Z11, it would be great if there was a comparison between those two

IS the ZII lighter than the Z1? because the AD08 was a lighter tire than the Z1. My AD08 rides better, sounds better, and grips slightly better than my Z1.

All the info is on tirerack's website under specs. The ZII is lighter primarily because it comes with 1/32 less tread than comparable sizes to the Z1 (few sizes are available for comparisons).

But the AD08 is lighter than both and has about the same tread 9/32 or 10/32 as the ZI depending on size. And the AD08 costs about $100 more per set than ZII.

Here are the available sizes: http://www.yokohamatire.jp/yrc/japan/tire/brand/advan/advan_ad08r_sizelist.html

Word is July 1 is the release date and supposedly they are expensive!

Is that the release date in Japan? or for here in the U.S.?

Like Ken said, any idea if they'll be sold in North America and if they are, how soon?

I need a new set of AD08s like yesterday, but if the AD08Rs are on the horizon, I'd rather wait for them.

Aparently, they'll be available in Asia, Oceania, and Central/South America. So far, no indication of release to North America or Europe... :frown:

Picked these up yesterday, literally had just cleared customs and arrived in the local distributor warehouse. Will be fitting them over the weekend to replace the original A022s from 1991!

I ran the regular AD08s on my Evo 9, based on that experience they were the best tyre I've ever used so expecting similar from these.

Hi
I have the AD08's on my NSX . Have done a track day at Eastern Creek ( Sydney Motorsport park)and regular road use with them . I have found them to be a great all rounder.
Who did you buy them from.

Simon

Hi Simon, bought them from Newington Tyres and More, ask for Scott. I think they were able to get them in fairly quick as Yokohama Head Office is across the road!

So are we thinking these would be as good as the RA1's for traction? I like the sizes.

They have close to double the treadwear rating as the RA1 so I would say no. Still street tire versus track tire. But... the are not that far off
