Windshield Replacement

In the service manual it calls for the replacement of the "Defrost Panel Seal". See pages 20-22 and 20-23. ...!
Don't see that either Hugh - I looked in the front bulkhead section as well as the interior & can't see a seal referenced (either by name or anything that looks likely)
The 'Defroster garnish' is the large plastic grill that is obviously inside the windshield at top of the dash - I can't see any seal between there & the screen in any of the relevant assemblies however?

Thanks Ken.

I'm expecting Safelite any moment. I'll photo-document the install for everyone and post it later on.

I've already done a lot of the prep such as removing the side garnish, upper molding and left over adhesive and the lower garnish which obliterated most of those damn yellow clips.

Safelite did a great job using a Pilkington windshield. The defrost panel shield was undamaged after the old windshield was removed. Seems to me it is part of the defroster panel and that's why there's no part number for it.

It's great having new glass. My old windshield had all those tiny little pits that were a pain in the ass in the sun.

By the way, I have an extra set of the moldings that go inside the new windshield prior to mounting. I'll list them in the Parts For Sale forum.

Does the Pilkington windshield have the VIN notch similar to the OEM or does the "black" just start lower on the entire windshield?

Yes it does. It's identical to the OEM shield in all respects.

Any trick to getting the glass from Safelite? When I tried about a month or two ago I was told there was no glass to be found anywhere. Also, how much did you pay?

Thanks.

Call around to some different glass installers. Actually mine both came straight from the warehouse AT the LOF (Plinkington) plant which is actually in NY State (or NJ?) which is obviously very close to you. I believe Safelite makes their own glass and they very well may not have a piece anywhere near you. I'm betting there's more where mine just came from though
Paid $150 a piece (not installed). The installer charged $80 a peice and I tipped $40 for being conscientious (and switching mirror tabs). The oem mirror tabs come already mounted to the LOF pieces of glass, btw.

I just called Pilkington's classic/exotic division. After being insulted by him telling me (a) it wasn't a classic (no kidding) and (b) it wasn't an exotic (just a glorified Nissan), he did say they have them in stock in their Ohio warehouse. $200 + $100 shipping. Now that I know they exist, I'm going to give my local installer a call to see what he can do.

hmm... nice guy!
I called the place that I got my windshields through and he's willing to ask a "favor" from the factory and have one drop-shipped to you at my price plus the worst-case $50 for shipping (as long as its a business address). So that's about $200 altogether. pm me if you want to do that - I'll give you his #. He said they won't work w/ anyone unless they buy truckloads of glass every month - and he does.

Very true, but I'm pretty sure they aren't the OEM supplier for the NSX. However, it doesn't really matter to me. I'm happy that I have a clear view now.

Yes I did. Especially the top molding since it shrunk over an inch! Purchased all the parts from our friends at Ray-Laks Acura.

Can someone tell me whether there should be a gap between the plastic molding at the top of the windshield and the metal of the roof? I had mine replaced, and can't tell if it fits right, since I don't remember how it was. It looks to me in the TSB (http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Reference/tsb/93-013.htm) that the "fastener" closes the gap. Is there no gap if done right? Can someone take a picture of OEM? Thanks.

Correct. There should be no gap. Think of the molding as a bridge between the painted surface of the car and the glass. If noone posts a pic before, I will post one next week when I'm w/ the car again.

These are some really bad pics but my camera died after the 2nd pic. Hopefully these help. I will try to get some better ones tomorrow.

That could be because they are an OEM supplier to Honda. :)

Just had my windshield replaced with Pilkington glass and the VIN cutout did not align correctly. The cutout was too low (about 1/8"), and that was with the glass slid all the way up. Everything else was fine and I'm very pleased!

All trim pieces (and the yellow cowl clips) were replaced too in NSXSOON's post (#24). Insurance company paid for everything ($700).

I just replaced mine with a pilkington. I installed it myself-- the cost of the glass was $215 CDN. turned out just as good as if any glass shop would have done-- if not better, because the car never got scratched while doing the install.
