Why in the world did I remove my spare!

Acura makes a nice air compressor too. It comes with the NSX. Why don't you guys have yours?

Bought the air compressor and tire repair kit before I got the NSX! Now I have 2 compressors..... You guys just can't imagine how handy that tire repair kit is especially if you need to be somewhere when you get a flat! That happened to me when I was going on a golf outing in my 5 series and we had to fix the flat - pulled out the clubs, jacked up the car, rotated the tire till i found the culprit screw - pulled it, routed the hole used the special goo and router, pulled out a plug and cut off the excess with the handy dandy knife/exacto and pilled the clubs back in after connecting the compressor to the cigar lighter - filled it up to pressure in about 5 or so minutes and off we went and made the tee time in plenty of time - try that with your gold AAA - bet that would take a half an hour just waiting.

No way I won't have em in all my cars on trips or just daily driving - it is a wonderful safety factor!

I always carefully monitor weather.com and watch for updates on when the showers will rain in. I had planned to be home before it rained; unfortunately all this mishap forced me to be out longer than expected.

Amazingly enough, my drive home resulted in a mild sprinkle but the cabin did not get wet. Somehow the pressure in the cabin is like a deflective shield against rain when my car was moving.

The only time I use my targa is during car washes. Other than that, it stays off 365 days a year. I bundle up like an Eskimo when driving in the sun during the winter days.

I can not explain why or describe it; but weight off the NSX is like weight off of me. It is definately some peace of mind.

I have had my car for 7 years and it has change the way I do things, crazy things to be exact.

I know you all have the same feelings.

I knew this thread would jink someone and that someone was me! Walking to my car yesterday and with a keen eye.... I see the left rear is flat. (If it was on the other side, I know I wouldn't have seen it.) Opened the trunk, out comes the air pump; plug it in...... pump up the tire..... drive home.

That worked pretty good........

he's understands the 7 P's of life , when does this BS. end:biggrin:

I've left my spare at home, but would never ever leave the roof at home.

that's cuz u live in Florida! Hurricane potential anytime from what I heard....haha

Here in on the west coast I "rarely" if ever put my targa on and go on short trips with the targa at home plenty of times with no issue

I just used my spare tire today. I was on my way to riverside, CA from Vegas and my tire exploded between barstow and victorville. (middle of nowhere) I did remove my spare for a few months and decided to put it back for some odd reason, glad i did. But i also had put up my pump, tools, and the parts for sale when i removed my spare and luckily it did not sell so i put it all back. Well to make a long story short, i put my spare tire back on and drove back to vegas going 45mph which took me 3hrs to get back.

Its been a long night......

Spare holds up well. I used mine at regular freeway speeds and then some for about 200 miles. Stupid, probably. Crazy, oh yeah....... Either way, spare holds up great. Atleast now I know I can drive at a reasonable 55 or 65 mph for long periods of time and still be safe. Oh, JUST DON'T SWERVE! I did have the rear end kick out slightly on the freeway dodging a pothole lol.

Hate to say it guys but unless you have your NSX as a dedicated track car w/ spares at the tract and you drive it a fair amount on the street then trying to save "weight" at the expense of not having a safety factor of air pump, tools and tire - is just plain silly! Be prepared guys - I can't imagine an older person doing this.

What's a tires' lifetime? 7 Years? Read the spare tires manual from the manufacturer. They specify a design lifetime for it.

I got rid of mine because it is 20 years old (you have to look at the code when it was made - not what model year your vehicle is).

I AM NOT WILLING TO RISK MY LIFE NOR MY FELLOW MOTORISTS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WITH A 20 YEAR OLD TIRE. ESPECIALLY 55-60 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY.

I am more than happy willing to wait 45 minutes for a flatbed to show up if my fix-a-flat and compressor won't do the trick.

Or you could always get another spare....or do they not still make them? I haven't checked. But you do make a point! That's why I carry a tire repair kit with me! But that won't take care of a major blow out.

If the spare is a critical part of the crashworthiness of the nsx, why are Type R's missing this spare?

I was going to comment on this earlier, but it usually ends up as a logic/engineering vs. paranoia/hearsay arguement.

There is no way that any of the agencies that regulate that type of thing would allow a manufacturer to claim a spare tire that is readily removable from the car as a significant portion of the crash structure of the vehicle...nor would any self-respecting engineer do this. It is a wheel, it is not designed to crumple. If anything, it is effectively shortening the impact absorbing distance available between the front bumper and the cabin, and is only there as a convenience on what was marketed as a GT car. The Type Rs do not have long road-trips in mind, ergo no need for a spare.

That said, if it lets you sleep at night, by all means, leave it in there...but use that as the reason as opposed to just making stuff up

sorry about that

Exactly. From a crashworthy-perspective as an engineer, I believe it is safer without it than with it.
