White smoke coming out of my engine!

Just as the killer rains in Northern CA paused last week, I was zipping around town in my recently acquired '91 NXS. As I was returning home I noticed what I thought was very cool vapor trails coming out the back of the car (the roads were still a bit wet). As I slowed to turn into my driveway the "vapor trails" turned into a billowing cloud! I though for sure my engine was shot - it was too good to be true that I actually owned such an awesome car. After it cooled down and the smoke cleared, I discovered a huge crack in one of the rear coolant hose and all my antifreeze gone. $500 and 6 brand new hoses, I'm back on the road. The moral of the story: Replace the 6 coolant hoses when you hit 100,000 miles (mine is at 101,000).

mc-ca you may want to check the maintainence records for the timing belt replacement as well. Many rubber items are on a replacement schedule that is time dependent if the car is below its recommended mileage.

mc-ca has a great point. The replacement of the cooling system hoses is not on the maintenance schedule, but you should do it anyway. I would suggest doing it after 6-8 years or 90K miles, whichever comes first. If you do it when you do the timing belt and water pump, and you do them on time, you should be fine.

Good point. The timing belt (and water pump) should have been replaced by now, since they are specified for 6 years or 90K miles, whichever comes first.

Yes, I did have the timing belt checked and it was in good shape. I had the car checked over by a pretty good dealer in the south bay. But now that I think of it, they totally missed the water hoses...

My understanding is that you can't tell by looking at the timing belt whether it's likely to fail or not.
