Alternator and compressor belts should be replaced every 30,000 miles. The whining belt may indicate that it is loose and is slipping on the pulleys. A good check of the correct tightness can be done by first locating the longest belt length between the pulleys and then using your index finger depressing the belt. It should deflect about the width of the belt. If it deflects more then this amount, the belt may be loose.
