Which Digital Camera ....?

Funny i was just thinking of getting a new Digicam as well.

I used to be into photography when i was around 18 (bout 5 years ago) and then i had a Canon EOS Rebel 35mm

Pictures always turned out great and it was easy to use.

When digital became the norm i had one of the old bulky Sony Cybershots that was pretty decent and last year i picked up a more compact Casio Exilim EX-Z50

5 Megapixel, 3x Optical Zoom, 2" LCD. Easy to use, Lightweight, only one problem ive seen so far...pictures at night or even low lighting dont come out that well.

So now this is the camera ive had my eye on lately,

Canon Rebel XT Digital
8.0MP

Here's more info on it:

I love canon's cameras so im hoping that this one will be badass

I just bought a Canon PowerShot SD450 to replace my stolen S400.

This camera is smaller than the Sony T5/T7. Has a 2.5' LCD, 5mp.

I'm pretty amazed by this little camera. Continuous shot is pretty fast, the menus are nice, it takes AMAZING videos, and everything is quick.

Downside is, my S400 took better photos at 4mp. (It's not about the megapixel count, it's about the lenses!), and it uses SecureDigital card. I like CompactFlash better.

I'd recommend a Canon SD550 for you. It's the 7mp version of my SD450.

You can also visit www.dpreview.com for reviews. Good stuff. Hope that helps...

I've had a sony for the past 4 years and i've loved it. its durable, (been dropped a lot) relatively small for a 4 year old camera and it makes great pictures.

if i were you, i'd focus more on size than on mp rating. only problem is that some of the smaller cameras don't have much a optical zoom. you can get tiny 5mp cameras with a 3x optical. these should be good for ya if you aren't doing professional stuff or making big ass posters with your shots.

Thansx * y'all for all your input. Much appreciated ! Have a Wonderful Weekend!!!*~*~*

Its shorter in height but not in thickness and although the canon produces better images the sony is more compact and easier to carry.

I got a Canon S500. It's perfect for me. Small, average size look'n, and it works for any occassion. I ain't gonna shell out $600+ for a cammy, when I'm not a professional.

I got the rebel XT for great pictures and a sony T1 for carry around camera. If I were you if you want mobile get any small high end camera or a SLR if you want professional looking pictures. Remember the Megapix does not mean good picture quality and digital zoom is a market gimmic. Digital zoom is the same as using a JPG viewer on your computer. Zoom it in and your picture quality decreases  .

I've been looking at the Nikon Coolpix 8700. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Thanks.
Short answer: Don't get it. Not worth it.

Long Answer: Noisy at anything over 50 ISO, wide end of the lense is not wide enough. For a little more you can get the 8800 which has image stabalization. Tiny CCD is not better than the 5700 and increases the noise over that sensor since they just shoved in 3million more pixels.

The pluses: It is small and can be taken anywhere whereas the DSLR would require 2-3 lenses to cover the same focal length range. Took mine 8700 to Italy and shot some pretty good pics, but if I did it right, I would have had a D-SLR. The body is magnesium so it should be pretty tough.

There are some great prices to be had on that camera right now.

Here is one of my fav pics from this camera (Its Low-Res, sorry about the quality). But if I had the money to spend over again (and I wanted a prosumer automatic camera) , I would probably get a canon product like a G6 over the 8700.

After looking around at some cameras and pricing, I got a good deal on it so I just took the plunge and bought it last night. My sister has an older coolpix, and I really liked the quality of the pics it took which is why I was going with Nikon. I guess I can try it out and see how I like it..I have 14 days to use it and see how the quality is. Also the Fuji Finepix s9000 looks good. Thanks for the info Hiroshima.

PS: Nice pic!

Two cameras that I'm seriously considering:

1. Fuji Finepix F10 6.3 megapixels (excellent for indoor or low light photography). ISO goes all the way up to 1600! Noise levels are so low that it's been compared to the Nikon D70! That's pretty damn good for a compact camera.

2. Casio Exilim Z750 7.2 megapixels (loaded with features that would satisfy even pro photographers) Ken Rockwell owns one of these and did an in-depth review. Check his website. You can manually control the aperture and shutter speed settings. Unheard of for a compact camera.
