When did the floor mat style change?

I am curious at what model year there floor mat style changed from the one without plastic tabs to the one with plastic tabs (see photo below). Any original owners have insight? I recognize this is rather trivial information, but hey - I like trivia!

Additional question - what are the plastic tabs for? Do they slide under the seat mount? Do early cars ave the ability to fit these tabs?

Correct, they slide under the rails. I believe they should fit without an issue in all model years.

The bigger question is when did the pin hole on the driver mat change from the right side to the left? I had a hell of a time getting the pin moved over!

Pin hole moved with the tabbed floor mats.

I also had problems moving the pin over. shawn110975 was kind enough to send me the yellow grommet.

If the screw hole on your existing yellow plug/grommet is not damaged too far, you can remove it by simply inserting the screw just one or two threads only and pull it carefully.
If you insert the screw any further, the plug/grommet will wedge itself into the square hole in the chassis panel making it impossible to pull it out.

My 2000 when I bought it in 2013 had mats with the hole on the right. But I'm not sure if these were the mats that originally came with the car.

I believe the OP has a 2001 with mats with the tabs and the hole on the left, but I'm not sure if that car came with that type of floor mat.

It is a mystery. One that is very trivial, but still, I'd like to know when they changed over too!!!

Ya - the floor mats that came with my 2001 look like the photo with the tabs and the pin is on the left. I am the 3rd owner and I can check with the second owner, but it doesn't look like the pin was moved to me (see photo below). It might be a 2001 and later thing as they were preparing for the face lift? Dunno.
