What work needs to be done to my NSX?

Hi

I talked with Gheba about this because I bought the car from him, but now I can not remember what he suggested I do.

I bought the car when it had 77.050miles/124.000km. Now it has 93.200miles/150.000km.

Last big service was at 73.000miles in may 2003 (and oil/filterchange every 4300miles/7000km):

Things done at that service:
Oil/filterchange
Gearboxoil change
Brakefluid change
Radiator flushed
Valve clearence

In 2001 when the car was bought from the dealer it had 55.000miles/88.000km
Clutch changed
All hoses in engineroom
Sparkplugs
All/some engine gaskets changed

I have changed oil/filter every 4300miles/7000km. Due changed when I take out the car in april/may. I have also changed brakepads at the back. Other than that I have just driven the car and enjoyed it.

So my question is what service should I do to my NSX this summer?

Oil and all that ofcourse, but what major service should I do? I know what the schedule in the service manual says I just wanted Primes thoughts on this.

TIA

Regards

Martin,

I would look at the on-line service manual and review the 60K mile service and the 90K mile service. The 90K service includes the timing belt/water pump, and the 60K service is more comprehensive from every other aspect.

For a car of the age yours is, I would do water/pump T-belt and 60K service.

I know it doesn't quite match the service manual, but here is my ritual:

Scheduled things I do myself:
Replace Oil Filter (every 3 mo)
Check Rotor & pad thickness (every 6mo)
Replace Brake Fluid & ABS bleed
Replace Clutch Fluid (every yr)
Replace Air filter (every 2 yrs)
Replace Fuel Filter (every 2 yrs)
Replace Coolant (every 2 yrs)
Replace Transmission Fluid (every 2 yrs)
Replace Spark Plugs (every 2 yrs)
Check Coil Packs (every 2 yrs)

Things I pay someone else to do:
Replace Timing Belt (every 6 yrs)
Replace Water Pump (with TB)
Replace major coolant hoses (with TB)
Get it inspected (with TB)
Alignment, AC, Clutch, etc. (as needed)

Other random stuff I do:
Any sort of troubleshooting
Fuel Additive cleaners
Check oil levels
Check the refrigerant window
Check belt tension
Uh, upgrades...

Larry, If I missed something let me know!

I know it sounds like a lot, but I think you'll find that you really enjoy working on the car - I know do.

I would replace the cooling system hoses at the same time. (This is not specified in the owner's manual, but is also good preventive maintenance for an older car.)

Hi

I forgot to write that the T-belt was changed at the service in 2001 so do you think I need to do that again after 38.525miles/62.000km?

Not sure if the waterpump was changed, but it would suprise me if it was'nt.

I will take a closer look at the 60/90k service in the book and also see what you guys recommend.

They were changed at the service in 2001. Do it again now?

i don't think there is a need for you to change them again yet.your car has not done 60000 miles since the last time it was changed nor has it been 6 years.i think you would be wasting your money.

Hello Martin, sorry I missed this post, thanks for the pm!

Timing belt, spark plugs and hoses were all changed (small trick, at least valid in Europe, you can see if the hoses were changed by looking at the metal plate in the engine bay with the serial number: it should be punctured somewhere, this is done after the hoses are changed, a Honda tech explained this to me longtime ago... :) ).

I would change all liquids (I do this every second year): oil, brake, clutch, transmission, radiator fluids should be flushed and exchanged. Clean and oil the K&N drop-in replacement filter too...

I wouldn't do anything more at the time: the timing belt can wait until 180'000km in my opinion (or three years, whatever come first... probably the mileage in your case! :) ).

No. I would change the cooling hoses each time you replace the timing belt and water pump. You shouldn't need to do those again for a while (according to the manual, every 90K miles or 6 years, whichever comes first, from the last time you had them done).

I wonder why it's different in the UK from here in North America?

Hi

I have no idea. In my swiss NSX "wartungsplan" it says "zahnriemen" every 60k miles or every 60months/5 years.

Hi

How about valveclearence? G

Gheba do you know when it was last done and when am I supposed to do it again?

Regards

Hi Martin, the valves were done in 2002, with the swap of several gaskets (I did it before the one year guarantee expired).

The valves were slightly ticking and around the gaskets I felt that sometime there was a little oil sprayed, I catched the occasion to have everything fixed before May 2002.

Somewhere around 105'000km if my memory is ok but it should be in the service book.
