What will you be doing at 80 years old?

Hmm..

From what I remember Hrant has a NA2 and FL has a NA1, it's not fair to only consider turns 14-15 going into 1 as the area where to decide who won the challenge.

The NA2 with it's 6 speed will have better gearing at that particular portion of the track than a NA1 with the 5 speed. At least that's a good backup excuse that *could* be used ;), hehe.

Sounds like you guys had fun out there.

Ken

P.S. someone PM'm me the laptimes for the day/days

This emperor has no clothes !

Well, what Al is saying in his unusual but eloquent prose is that he got beat fair and square

Not only he did not pass me out of 14/15, but he did not pass me anywhere else on the track  I have no clue to his reference that he left us standing in the dust, it must the heat stroke that has affected his recollection  I have two other NSXs to attest to this, Allen and Steve who were following him on the track - we were four NSXs that got on the track together and ran together in toe for several laps; it was great fun. Allen who was on R compound was holding back and laughing while were duking it in the heat. In a later session, Allen did pass me and kudos to him and to his well tuned car. I will post a picture where I am holding the 1$ bet when Steve (SMGNSX) forwards it and a proof of who was actually in the dust

And Ken, sure it is fair game to compare the two NSXs! Al's NSX has the short gears, Comptech headers and exhaust which equalizes the HP and the six speed advantage, 4 point harness belts whereas I am still dancing in the OEM seats with three point harness, Koni adjustable suspension with Eibach whereas I am on Bilstein/OEM springs, noncompliant beam, he has a brand new Wilwood rotor and caliper - I am running on turned and new pads that were embedded just before the session started, aftermarket clutch vs OEM clutch, and both he and his car are lighter by at least 200 lbs ...... But more importantly, Al himself considered this challenge to be fair comparison for the first time - though he now claims the Michelin Sport were no match to my OEM Bridgestone tires that have seen some serious track miles and heat cycles ...... excuses, excuses, excuses  But as the gentleman that he is, he took in the spirit of the of sportsmanship - he finally conceded

I am sure Al will work on some other mods before the next event, and will never go back to street tires as the ensuing stress might be too much for his heart muscles to handle

Wow ! You guys are blowing my mind!

It was an interesting day on Friday with Trackmasters, I had no idea about the competition between you guys (all in good fun!) but the dollar and the pictures my son took of all 4 of us on the track or should I say 3 of us left were PRICELESS come to find out, I will foward them to Hrant when I download them and He can do what He must with them.

Then on Saturday it was a blast as well with NCRC with Kip, Brian B. Hrant, Chen and myself and even Ted.

KIP you are the man when you drove my car you left me some BALLS in and it helped me alot, I GOT INTO SEARS POINT THIS MORNING so I will be in touch this week Thanks for all your help and THANKS in advance for your help on Friday the 5th

All you NSX guys are GREAT and I am glad to know you ALL

See you guys soon.

PS.
Al I hope you feeling ok and (I told you to use my spare tires and wheels) I can even give you 15% more HP with me cheating Nascar and Drag racing fuel mix its alot of $$ but let me know! and it evaporates before the fuel check!! no one will KNOW.

Hehe,

Lot's of smack talk going on here, I personally think that for most folks who have *not* been running on street tires for a while at the track, going back from R-compounds back to street takes a bit of getting used to.

I think that FL's right about the tires too, from what I recall the OEM Bridgestone's have a treadwear rating of 140 or so and the MPS have a rating of 220 so the OEM should be grippier too probably worth a couple of seconds at least.

It could also be that the aftermarket clutch was slipping for FL, you know that you can't beat the OEM clutch on the NA2's.

I could probably go on with possible excuses but I better keep them to myself just in case I need to use them in the future :D

So for the next shootout Hrant, you should step up and borrow some R-compounds from someone, you might still be faster than FL because you've been running with street tires for a while ;)

Safe driving ya all

I rest my case ........

FUN WAS DEFINITELY HAD BY ALL!!!!

I haven't had that much fun since Ken and I had 2 or 3 nose to tail sessions at Laguna and Kip & I ran nose to tail a few laps @ Reno-Fernley last year! (Trust me...it was only because Kip wasn't there the day before to learn the track like the rest of us!)

My last session had Kip "playing" with me until I let it hang out a bit more! So, missing a downshift into 2nd in T11, Kip was able to close the gap considerably! (more excuses available if need be!). However, I actually have a witness - as Ted was weighing me down as my passenger (dead-weight breathing)! Kip decides to draft me through the S's (T12-T13) and tucks right in down the backstretch. I quickly decide that he's going to FINALLY have to work for a change to make the pass - cause I dove to the right side as he made his move to the left! I actually told Ted that this "Mutha/Fatha" is goin' to have to pass me on the outside!!! The quick "fatherly advise" from Ted is..."KEEP IT TIGHT, JUST KEEP IT TIGHT!!!"

Kip & I enter T14 SIDE-BY-SIDE! Although I have a slight advantage in 14, he's able to get his nose slightly ahead in 15, making me keep a tight line through the apex because he's making the pass...ON THE OUTSIDE!!!

Of course, once the pass is executed, Kip's 400+ RWHP waived buh-bye..."thanks for playing"!

My only consolation was Kip pulling me aside after the session to tell me (without any witnesses - cause he's whispering) that I had the better line and could have "squeezed or punted" him off by simply tracking out after apexing 14. Knowing Kip has to have the last word, he parts by saying that we would have been trading paint though 'cause "I wouldda made that pass stick!!!" That's the Kip we all know and love!

If anyone would like to contribute to the "Make Brian's car faster/Engine Swap" fund, I'd greatly appreciate it!!! Donations are accepted in any denomination!

All in all, I think everyone had a ball! My only wish would have been that more of us showed up! Maybe next time!

BTW: Anyone other than Kip and I attending THIS Friday @ Infineon w/T-Masters?

Re: A Peak Experience

I haven't had that much fun ………… However, I actually have a witness - as Ted was weighing me down as my passenger (dead-weight breathing)!
Now why is it that I’m always riding with you when you have so much fun with Kip?
Kip & I enter T14 SIDE-BY-SIDE!
You know, you wait a long time for a peak experience and that was sure one. In the microsecond I realized he was coming on the outside, time stood still; first I saw my hot 3rd grade teacher, then my complete life flashed before my eyes. As complete calm set in I noticed a cloud in the distance that looked like the grim reaper waving a checkered flag. And I didn’t care anymore what you were yelling…………..I knew I was going straight to hell.

If anyone would like to contribute to the "Make Brian's car faster/Engine Swap" fund, I'd greatly appreciate it!!!
Give it up, ain’t gonna happen. You’ve got the entire Comptech catalog on your car now. But Kip’s car is Shad’s R&D test mule, so he’s always going to get stuff first. But there’s 2 things you can do: Enzyte and apex later in 11.

OK, here's the best thing you can do. Maybe this should be a whole new thread, but IMHO, get a data acquisition system. Several out there would do just fine for you. $6k in a data system should do more for your laptimes than $6k in engine internals. And it would save you the embarrasment of asking wankers like me for advice and being subjected to posts like this.

Well Hrant doesn't remember the first session where I did pass him on one of the sweepers and then took off. I will agree however that in the turn 14/15 scenario on all sessions I could not make the pass on Hrant but that would be the only place. I also don't have the B...s like Kip and Brian do to make passes on tight hairpins side by side. The first session was only a warm up session for me to get use to the tires and new brakes. Kind of scary. The brakes were so much better that the front tires just couldn't handle it. I've never been a fan of Michelin Pilot street tires especially as compared to the Toyo T1s. That tire is way better than the Pilot. Street tires are just not as much fun as the sticky stuff and I'm in the process of finding some tire size matches to change that. The session you see me spinning out was our third session and a lot of people were having problems with the track getting very slick due to the heat. We're not finished with this and maybe some laptimes will clear up who's got the overall speed on the track.

Kind of off topic:
You guys made me want to move to Cali....so much, like yesterday...

Anyone have a job offering so I can move there with my nsx and be able to pay my divorce fees

Re: And another thing !!!

Brian, since you're an energetic and optomistic soul, you've read and memorized all 4 of the Ross Bentley Speed Secrets books, right? So, while you're learning how to use/interpret the data system, (don't tell Kip you've got one, whatever you do), re-read the last 2; Innner Speed Secrets and most important: Engineering the Driver. Cheapest speed you'll ever buy.

Just when I thought we had settled this issue, Al starts coming up with new versions of the truth as he "thinks" he saw it unfold! I guess it ain't over yet.

...... Al you are royally confused since I did not go out on the first session with you as I was doing classroom instruction  It must have been the third black NSX under the canopy that never joined us socially or otherwise ......

I will agree however that in the turn 14/15 scenario on all sessions I could not make the pass on Hrant but that would be the only place.

.......... Hmmmmmmmm, the four of us go out all together at the same time with clear track ahead of us, and I have three witnesses that say you didn't pass me anywhere, nor came close to do so. By the end of the front straight I was about 50 feet ahead of you every time  The video exiting turn 12/13 speaks to how far you were behind me - I will send it to you and I wish we can post here to settle this

I also don't have the B...s like Kip and Brian do to make passes on tight hairpins side by side. The first session was only a warm up session for me to get use to the tires and new brakes. Kind of scary.

.......... I agree with the first part, most of us do not have an open checkbook  but it was in this session that you purportedly passed me and then took off when I was in the classroom .......... See, we know you are older but my memory cells are younger than yours

The brakes were so much better that the front tires just couldn't handle it.

........ Hey, I have the same issue with more braking power with Dali's two piece rotors than the tires - albeit they were just turned and embedded an hour before the track. So no excuses please especially when your calipers weigh at least 5lbs less on each wheel ........

I've never been a fan of Michelin Pilot street tires especially as compared to the Toyo T1s. That tire is way better than the Pilot. Street tires are just not as much fun as the sticky stuff and I'm in the process of finding some tire size matches to change that.

........ True. But sticky stuff hides and compensates for driver errors - and you know whom you can ask  As Ken said above, the next test should be both on track tires or the same scenario for an encore .......... but them track wheels that I have been looking for! Anyone has a set of 02+ wheels that want to sell me? We can put an end to this competitive smack talk excuses quickly

The session you see me spinning out was our third session and a lot of people were having problems with the track getting very slick due to the heat. We're not finished with this and maybe some laptimes will clear up who's got the overall speed on the track.

Oh no you don't get off so easy after me waiting for three years for you to equalize the playing field to put an end to this one sided bragging rights  Play fair. If you are going to compare performance and lap times, and speeds, ......... do it with similar equipment or start comparing yourself to Allen's times

All in fun of course. And, we welocme all others who want to join us on the track, especially now when we have luxurious accommodations with Kip's, Steve's and Don's trailers

Below are some more pics with me leading Al at various intervals, and Steve chasing Al. Allen was holding back in fourth and is out of the frame. Last pic is from the video coming out of 12/13 and it speaks volumes

This is getting pretty good! Hell, this is better than any Sit-Com or Reality Themed show on TV these days!!!

Re. Ted's comments: I thought Hank's "Secrets of Solo Racing" book would be the ticket? Hank will be quite dissapointed that it wasn't enough to get me under 2.10.00 at T-Hill! My brain can only handle a book or two/year! I gotta save those cells so I can still late brake into my 80s like P.Newman!

Re. Al & Hrant's comments: I have to borrow a phrase from our good friend Kip..."just sack up and get the mods!" Simply give them a signed check with the dollar amount left blank like K.O. does each time. This way the Comptech boys can fill it in at their leisure with an unknown amount!

Re. Andrie's comments: How do I get a data acq. and still keep it from Kip? He has spies and everything gets back to him! Plus I have said it 1,000 times...Kip and I can switch cars and he'd still be quicker than I! Not only does he have the trick equipment, he's a damn good driver.

NOTE: With that said, did I just buy extra time in his air conditioned trailer for the next 40-50 track events? Or at least lunch this Friday?

As a finality - I CANNOT wait until the next event where we're all at the track at the same time! I'd love to see the Al/Hrant battles first hand. I'm sure it's worth the price of admission!!!!!!

Brian, Kip drove my car in the point by for a session in just about 2nd gear all around the track and picked off the field one by one even the white GT-3 car, that proves Kip can drive an NSX even a no HP car like mine.

I'm looking for a new 3.3 liter low comp race motor will pay cash Got One?

Steve

Kip is a good driver, but FYI, A GT3 with R-compounds with a good driver would probably be about 10 seconds faster than someone driving your car with street tires.

At the last track event at Infineon I was on track with Kip Olson, I ran across a GT3 guy running R-compounds (MPSC) that were about to cord, he was taking it somewhat easily and he was about 3 seconds slower than Kip who was running with slicks.

A GT3 with slicks with a good driver would be about as fast as Kip on his NSX with slicks.

Check the results for the speedventures event at Infineon on 4/3/2005 for reference:

http://www.speedventures.net/event_results_db.asp?

Kip on his CTSC NSX with slicks: 1:47.898
caleb on his GT3 with MPSC: 1:51.525 :D
2slow2speed on NA2NSX with SO3's: 1:58.221 :(

Ultimately I think that you guys will need to start referencing some laptimes in order to talk smack :D (just teasing you all).

I still think that pound per pound Kip's NSX is the most reliable Supercharged NSX (that is still street legal) out there putting down nice laptimes.

Doug's Flamemobile is not quite a street legal car, in the true spirit of the word "street legal", hehe...

Hmm.. I remember reading something from Doug a while back, where he stated that there were quite a few S2K drivers out there who were able to get below 2:12 (no bypass) at Thill with R-compounds. Still waiting for more NA NSX's to beat 2:12 with street tires to prove him wrong

To any track newbies following this; Brian's just kidding here; he really knows that, although data can improve the car, in this case, it's more about improving the driver.
Re. Ted's comments: I thought Hank's "Secrets of Solo Racing" book would be the ticket?
Son, you better come by the office, get my books and take me to lunch. You got some book learnin' to do !!! With a little reading over the next couple of nites, you could improve a second, maybe two at Friday's event !!!

Sure, but you are missing the subtext John ............. there are the haves and then there are the have nots in our boy racer mix . And each group is in a fierce friendly competitive smack talk upsmanship for bragging rights while at the same time each group eggs the members of the other group to compete among themselves by needling the not so soft egos into action  ......... and the plot thickens when the deck is reshuflled as the group dynamics and loyalties change - whining with excuses notwithstanding  But this time, with a more fair playing field, I had the goods on Al with proof to settle it. And I am not going to let it go easy; I waited for morre than three years for this

Didn't I drove your car with S03 and posted 2:09 or was it 2:07s? in my first time out with your car and you in passenger seat? It was with shitty Tein suspension too! Give me a day and time to tinker with your suspension, I guarantee I can drop at least a couple more seconds. 2:05s in your car with street tire is achievable.

Andrie,

Yep, you got into the 2:09's with ease with me as a passenger in the car and the SO3's and crappy Tein RA's, the next time that you got to test my car with the busted Tein RA's you were barely able to get into the 2:12's after fighting with the car  that's when I knew that the car had problems because I could barely break into the 2:14's myself

I don't doubt that you can get into the 2:05's with my car with street tires, but more than likely it would require running without the big A$$ Route KS wing and using the Marga Hills rear wing instead :D

I remember reading somewhere that Telly got into the 2:09's with your old NSX with street tires at Thill so no doubt that there are other folks who are under 2:12's it's just that you guys moved on and don't come out and play with your NSX's anymore.

Ken

P.S.: I ran into Mark (World Challenge Guy who used to campaign his 928GTS) yesterday, and he mentioned that some of the World Challenge guys will be doing testing at Laguna Seca at the SCCA race this weekend in preparation for the ALMS weekend.

Ken, to my knowledge, I am not aware of anyone who is running at or under 2:12 if they are NA1/2 without superchargers and on street tires - except for the ones you mentioned and those are really track cars given the weight/suspension/alignment/wings.
