What kind of shifter is this...

It is the factory shifter with a custom shift knob. The center console is a one-off with custom upholstery.

It's quite classy, drawing some similarities to Ferrari's Shifter without being a replica.

The shift knob itself I find pretty easy to pull off, but the chome base is damn slick looking. I wonder how much something like that would cost?

Here's the shift knob http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1857994544&rd=1

The one on eBay is gunmetal color and the one in the picture is polished or chrome.

I have a Momo shift knob that looks just like that (big polished/chrome ball). I'll sell it to you cheap if you want. It came with a used car I bought.

The base is more than just that metal ring. That entire trim panel has been replaced with a custom unit.

Yeah - check out the circular air vents at the top. Very Italian-esque and blocking the vent like that will reduce its effectiveness making it more Ferrari-like!

Why on earth would you want to add a gated shifter to a car that doesn't need it??? Even on cars that did need it, it was always one of the most widely criticized parts of the car.

Looks?

Wouldn't it be possible to design the shape of the gated plate so that it doesn't restrict the shift knob in any way, and merely outlines the area where the stalk of the shift knob moves anyway?

(referring to the Supra guys trademarking BPU)
I thought someone might ask me that. No, because I got it from the "Star Trek Nitpickers Guide (a cool series of books that good naturedly pick apart Star Trek episodes). They use it to describe events on the TV show when it does something that is unnecessary but looks whipppin' cool (kind of like the gated shifter in the MR2.
