I am trying to get a quote trying to ship overseas. UPS wanted $645!

What have you guys done?

Update. USPS looks like about $250.

UPS is by far the worst for shipping anything. I was going to be a smartass and just post "boat", but honestly try FedEx or USPS. FedEx is usually who I only ship through. faster, cheaper, more reliable.

FedEx and UPS are both terribly expensive for overseas shipping. The post office is usually much better.

You can compare rates on their websites for any particular package (weight, size, shape) and destination:

www.usps.com
www.fedex.com
www.ups.com

Domestically, FedEx usually wins; two exceptions are heavy stuff that fits inside a priority mail flat rate box for quick shipments, and large heavy items shipped standard post, which is what they used to call parcel post. UPS is almost never the cheapest.

These comments assume you're an individual. Businesses that do a lot of shipping often have negotiated favorable rates with one carrier over the others.
