Don't want to spend over $5000-6000. Don't want to change my transmission. '92 3.0 l automatic with Comptech exhaust and K&N filter with OEM airbox now. Thinking of adding NOS 50 to 75 shot and Comptech headers. No drag racing, no serious track usage, just a weekend cruiser. Questions are
1) best bang for the buck? 2) Am I going to want supercharger for more low end grunt?
3) will the tranny be OK? Sorry for the long post, thanks!

1. Nitrous tends to give the most additional power for the least amount of money, so it wins "bang for the buck" when you're on it. Of course, you're not on it all the time, only when you decide to use it. Headers will nicely supplement any forced induction mod.

2. Rather than low end torque, I would think the bigger difference between nitrous and a supercharger is that the SC is always there and working, whereas the nitrous is only on demand. Also, even the BaschBoost, which is the least expensive supercharger, is going to be (slightly) over your stated price range.

3. No one can guarantee whether your transmission will, or won't, be fine. That's a risk that you will need to consider. Furthermore, I don't think anyone (even Mark Basch, who probably knows better than anyone in the world) can say, with confidence, that there is an x percent probability that a failure will occur. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Mark, and if so, tell us what x is.)

Weigh the cost of the mods, the benefits, the (unknown?) chances of a transmission failure, and the cost of fixing/replacing the transmission if one occurs, along with your personal tolerance for financial risk, in order to make your decision.

If you're looking for low end grunt, it looks like the positive displacement superchargers are going to be your best bet. However, once the nitrous is activated, you will have a large power gain come on.

You can do a search for the NSteXpo Dyno day results; one of the cars (maybe 2?) in it has a nitrous kit installed, as well as the 3 main superchargers (although the Basch Boost there was not close to the current kit). That will show you what you have to expect for a power curve.

As for the tranny, I would think that it would be fine, simply from the number of posts that I have seen, people I have met that are running nitrous and super/turbo chargers on their NSXs - none of them mentioned transmission problems that I remember.

Thanks Ken, Lud shares your opinion. Comptech claims to have several of their SC's on automatics but, good God, $9800?!
I wish that Mark B. felt differently about his SC and automatics.

Yes, but how many of them have automatics?

Doh!

In the future, I plan to try and read *all* of the post before writing my reply.

OK, ok, how about this defense - Hondas are strong - it should be fine!
