water hose gone wild

Hello everybody,

I recently took my NSX for a spin, and when the engine was at the proper temperature i floored it and there was nothing wrong.

but 30 seconds later when i'm was cruising and turned of the AC, there was smoke coming out ot my ventilating ducts ....
I looked at my water tempgauge and it was just over half of the gauge, so i pulled over.
then i looked behid me and there was a lot of coolant on the road that i've lost. I immediately turned the engine off as the temperature was rising, but still keep the fan spinning.

I towed the NSX to my home, and when i took a closer look at the engine compartment I noticed that 1 coolant hose came of from the Engine oil cooler.
I'v added a picture, the hose with the red arrow came off.

So, if i place the hose back and fit a better clamp like this one:

And refill it with coolant everything wil be fine???
Please help :frown:

Thank you

First off , the clamp you show is not better, Period.

Was the hose replaced recently?

Is the hose still in good shape?

I would buy a NEW hose and factory clamps and put them on.

the hose wasn't replaced recently, but still in good shape.

If i just put it back on with the same clamp then it would probably go off the next time if I floored it?

So just a replace clamp on it and go ?

If hose looks to be perfect, I would just replace the clamp with a FACTORY clamp as suggested. Replace ALL the 22 or so hoses at the same time if you don't know the history of the replacement. Of course, you then have to bleed the system either way you go.

Martin, your signature says that you have a 3.0l motor but doesn't say what year. Have you ever done a total hose replacement on your car? This may be a good time to do it, before you lose another hose.

I used the clamp in your post on that same hose and it does loosen up after a while. Be sure to bleed your system (exactly as the manual states) before driving, to get any air out of it. HappyMotoring!

yeah replacing all of the hoses would be the way to go. its a Bitch to do it but it can be done if you have One full day to waste on it.

but putting it back on with a new clamp will work, and bleeding the air outta the system. if you dont bleed it you will get fu_c_d hard

Was the timing belt/water pump done recently? That hose gets jiggled when you remove and re-install the oil coooler during the TB/WP procedure.

Hint: When doing a hose replacement job, its easiest to do this hose by removing the oil cooler. Be sure to by the oil cooler "figure 8" gasket if you chose that route.

If hose looks to be perfect...
...you still have absolutely no idea about how much the hose can take, means if the weaved structure which makes the hose strong is old and cracking or brand new. Remove one of the three 15+ years main hoses of the engine and you know what I mean. You should hear a slight cracking while twisting it. Installing such a hose back leaves you stranded somewhere for sure.
The ones at the oil cooler are prone to fail first.

I replace all my hoses a year ago and i used same clamps, they are pretty strong .

Thank you for al your replies.

It's a '91 NSX, I have my car a year now and yes, when i bought the car i had the timing belt/water pump done. I don't know when or if the hoses are ever replaced.

Another thing i noticed this morning is that the clamp was not on the end of the hose where it should be, it was 1,5 inch further back on the hose, so this could be the cause, the clamp also showed some corrosion on it.

I've ordered the clamp at my dealer, and also a lot of coolant.

the late reply is because I'm from Holland, and while i'm writing now you guys are still in bed

Pretty sure is. Say thanks to the guy who worked on the TB/WP. This is major fault.

Yeah, but then i'm lucky that it has hold 4000 km the last year. . .

Oh, I have the workshopmanual for the NSX and the bleeding of the coolingsystem has to be exactly the same way as described ?

You may not fill the expansion tank and radiator and start the engine while having both caps of and then refilling when needed ?

Yes, good luck! Think about what you would be saying if you didn't notice it early enough?

Bleeding has to be as described. You don't want air in the system and kill your engine, do you?

Martin, as I, and others, have mentioned before, your hoses can't be accurately assessed by simply looking at them. They are likely almost 20 years old and should probably all be changed.

I'll do that in time, after the summer when i'm not driving the NSX i'll have some time left.

Since the hose was 1.4" back on the hose , this means teh guy who did the TB/WP forgot to put it on, I have had cars come in with clamps pushed back like that , and the hose was still on , the smaller hoses will take time to work loose.
