PAL,
You will probably be able to pick up a good used s2k for 30 in a few months. Judging by your comments, you definately will not be able to afford the NSX. BTW, does your dad realize how much he will be paying for insurance? OMG!

I agree with alot of the guys here.

If a 16 year old inexperienced driver driving an NSX doesnt kill you, the insurance will. Im 25 with no infractions, and last Iquoted for insurance on an NSX, I only have to pay 103 a month. Unlike some people I know (21-23) they haveto pay about 2500-2600 a year on insurance (And thats when they are 21-23, i dunno about a 16 year old!) I suggest you get a car that you can live with for a few years until you get used to driving for afew years and know you're not gonna crash, and save th cash u saved on buying this one until your next one. Please remember when you buy a car thats in the caliber of an NSX, factor in these general costs.

1)NSX =30000-90000 depending on new or used
2)Insurance= 1300-possible 5000 a year. The lower number only applies to people probably over 25 years old with no infractions. There is NO WAY at your age you well be seeing this for your insurance. You will probably see close to 3000-5000 a year oninsurance.
3)Maintanence = About 2000 per checkup, maybe 500-2000 for parts replacements.

Remember, with one call to your insurance company, you can find out how much you would pay for insurance on the NSX or on any other car - and you can call now, before you commit to buying a car. Doesn't hurt to find out in advance...

VERY true. I came very close to buying a CRX HF brand new for about $9000 when I was 19 (yes, they were that inexpensive). I found out from my insurance company that it would cost me $3000 per year (in NJ). didn't make sense to pay the value of the car to the insurance company for the three years I'd be driving it.

Don't get me wrong, NSX is still the better car. But the eclipse's aren't that bad (exculding the current model, yick).

Don't get me wrong, I got the eclipse since I loved the look. But that car spent a total time of 3 months in the shop (while still under warranty) for everything from engine, transmission, and electrical problems. The car would have qualified as a lemon but it was 1K miles beyond the point where you could claim it as a lemon. I have heard alot of horror stories from other people about the car. AND mitsu didn't even give me a courtesy car during all this time!! Oh and it only took them 7!!! tries to get the transmission right!!

Pal,

Your a girl right? well listen, here in My amma (Miami) insurance is ridiculous. I am sure it isn't much better in NY. Also listen to what you wan't out of a car. You complain that the cars suggested by other's are too slow. Remember the faster and sportier (is that a word?) cars will have higher insurance and a greater risk for you to have an accident. I read the post where a member was lost during a drive. I am truly sorry to hear that. I looked through this post twice to find the specific one but I am so tired from work I didn't have much luck finding it again. Whatever you end up getting Pal, be careful out there.

It sounds like a few of us remember back to when we were 16. If pal is anything like I was, he is sitting back going "these ass holes don't know what they are talking about. I can handle the car". Well, having been there and done that, I can tell you these ass holes DO know what they are talking about. Sounds like you have a passion for cars. Great. The best advice I have heard so far is go to driving school. Save some money though, because you will have so much fun in driving school you will want to go to racing school.

You will learn a lot in driving school, but what they dont teach you in driving school is how to remember what you learned when you have 3 friends in the car with you, lots of HP at your disposal, and the desire to show off in front of your friends. Does anyone else remember being immortal at that age? I do. Remember, when you press on the gas to race someone, pass someone, general unsafe showing off, you risk taking other children (your friends) away from their parents. You risk killing them and you. Is that a burden you want. Deep, huh?

So, let me step off the soap box and give you some advice. Go buy a $15k whatever, you can get a nice, and fast enough car for that money, with a hitch (will explain). Go spend $5k on driving and racing school. Trust me, you will have a blast and want to spend another $5k to do them again. Take the remaining $10k and buy a 80cc shifter kart and trailer (hitch make sense now?). Go race the kart every weekend. For that money you will have a ultra competitive kart, but will get beat for a year. Why? You will be the limiting factor. However, it will be a venue that will teach you to drive. Oh, buy the way, it WAY more fun than anything you could do on the street, and it is legal and fairly safe.

If you really want a sports car and have the need for speed I strongly suggest the following:

1. Buy a used miata. They're cheap and can be modified a lot. If you wreck it you'll have enough cash to repair it.

2. Buy a shifter cart and learn how to drive correctly. Visit the web site http://www.skusaonline.com/ to learn more.

3. Join SCCA and drive autocross and participate in then Miata club.

4. Join SKUSA and show your stuff on the track. You want real excitment that you can afford on you $6/hr job this is probably the best route.

If you do this you don't have to wait until next year. You can start having fun right now. You are wanting to have fun right, not trying create a false image of big man on campus?

Even though I'm an old fart I can remember high school like it was yesterday. I realize today everyones image is their car. Guess what it was that way when I was in high school too. Let me tell you a little secret it's the car's image not yours. You can't buy an image. You can create it. Go learn how to drive shifter karts. When some one tells you how fast their car is you can yawn. Invite them to watch you race. Recommend they come out for a 1/2 day driving session.

I couldn't imagine bringing a NSX to my high school parking lot. Jealous teenagers love to vandalize things (I remember an incident involving pizza sauce on a classmate's car). Hell, I just bought a new car for my wife so I could drive her Civic to work (my NSX was vandalized in the parking structure near my office).

I can't imagine being 16 and having an NSX...especially considering that when I was that age, the first NSX had not yet been announced.

I will gladly third the motion that the yellow WRX looks like S**T (sorry Lud, and LemansNSX, I will be more considerate from here on out)

I live in the northern midwest, and endure the harsh winters near NY. I have to agree with Dr. Lane, a GTI is one great way to go. You get a drivers car, with room for passengers,Front wheel drive for the winter, and if you can find a VR6 in Ginster Yellow you have a few of your previous qualifications (The GTI VR6 is one seriously FAST customer, I saw 140 in one, and the handeling is on par with any BMW I have driven). No convertible though...
frown.gif

Have you thought about a Used Jeep Wrangler? That is a sweet convertible/ winter car, and you can pick up a 94-96 for less than 10K, then buy a used Miata or something with the rest of your dough, just a thought.

Pal, you are in a great position at your age to have even 20K at your disposal for a car. I had an 86 Ford Tempo at your age. Be wise beyond your years in this decision, and remember even highschool chicks look at a man for more than his car.

Good advice, the miata is a great car and you can mod it a lot if you get bored with a stock one

(I still have my miata from when I was 19 (I'm 30 now), lowered/stiffened/turbo, and it's still great fun to drive, especially on the edge - something which is a bit harder to get to in the nsx on normal roads

)

....just don't get an automatic one!

I would like a Miata, but they are too common IMO. I'd rather have a Mustang convertible.

A Mustang convertible is just as common as a Miata, isn't it?

An S2000 however, will have lower maintenance costs then an NSX, right?

Yes. Aside from parts cost being lower, the S2000 will still be under warranty and miles will still be low.

What should i do?

Get a Miata.

So many young guys on here with NSXs. I'm 26 and could afford a nice used one. What the hell am I waiting for?

My gf would probably kill me if I got an NSX before she got a ring

That being my entire point. If I wanted a car that common, I'd get a Stang. Does anyone have pics of any modified Miatas? How fast can you get them running? They will never be as nice as an S2K tho.

There's one here in TX that runs in the 10s. And I know of several here that run in the 11s or low 12s. Thats pretty quick.

Corky Bell (also a Texan) makes several turbo kits for them. There are also some Eaton-based blower kits.

In terms of horsepower, people turn the stock 150 (give or take, thats not exact) into 300hp....thats a pretty good jump for such a light car.

True that the S2k is a better platform than the miata, but its insurance and costs of ownership are higher - take your pic. You can get a slightly used '99 or '00 miata and drop some NICE mods into it, and still have plenty of money left over for insurance coverage and repair costs. Not a bad way to go.

Not that I will get one, but if I did have 30,000 it would be nearly impossible for me to pass up an NSX.

I dont care if its 4,000 a year to insure; i'll pay it. That car is so incredible i wouldnt really care; it would easily be worth it to me.

Maintenance? On average maybe $200 a month? Doesn't bother me.

Maybe it is ridiculous for a 16 year old to own one, it will be a 10 year old car, costing less than many rich kids SUVs, but it was MY MONEY. You guys have seen NSXs, they are some of the hottest cars ever.

Also, I am just as likely to die in a 300 HP Miata, probably more likely, than an NSX. So if you want to think of it that way, i'm dead either way.

That's why I suggested a GTI or something. If you're dead you can't drive at all, and your attitude shows us that you are not ready for a sports car.

We have all provided you with very good information but you still have no idea what you are getting yourself into. You should just go out and buy a GSXR 1100 and make it painless.

Sorry guys, but this thread is just plain ridiculous already.

When I was 16 I had a motorcycle, a Ducati 200 Elite. When I was 18 I had my first car, it was a 1967 Austin Mini Cooper. That was the most fun car I've ever had, and it continues to be in my mind the most exciting car I've ever owned in my life - including the 1999 NSX I own today. Nothing compares to that! If I were you, I would wait for the new Mini Cooper to come to BMW dealers (very soon) and take one for a test drive - I'm sure going to do that - and if it is anything like the original, I'm sure I'll buy one and trade my 2000 RL daily driver for it.
Don't listen to the old farts, I'm one of them and I never listened to them when I was your age. Just get what you want and enjoy life. Life is too short, live it!

lemansnsx is right, there is no need for the excessive profanity. It does not add anything to the discussion. Please go back and clean it up or the messages will be deleted.

I agree... that kind of language is frequent on the clubsi board, but not here. Keep it clean.

Personally, I don't think the concept is ridiculous. But have you really thought this through? Here are some other issues which may not have been brought up yet:

I assume this is going to be your only car, and to be frank, it has some serious limitations for someone who uses the NSX as a primary driver. What happens if you want to go out with more than one buddy? Well, you guys won't be taking your car, that's for sure. Have you seen the trunk? Is it enough space to carry your gear?

What about parking at the mall or movie theatre? Are you going to be comfortable parking your baby in tight spaces and watch it acquire innumerable dings over the years? Are you prepared to pay 100 dollars a ding to take them out?

What about in town driving? Have you even driven one of these in town? I'm sure members on the board will disagree with me here, but I don't find the NSX fun to drive at all in local traffic (maybe due to my comptech clutch). Is that the sort of driving you'll be doing mostly? You'll be trying to drink water from a firehose if you do. It'll get the job done, but its overkill. You may reach third gear on a good day.

Finally, the NSX doesn't exactly have a small turning radius. The problem is exacerbated by the lack of power steering in earlier models. You'll have alot more fun driving a smaller car, like an MR2 Spyder or a Miata in town.

I drive about 40-60 miles a day to commute to work along a 5 lane scenic highway where I can achieve speeds upwards of 80 miles. Its a blast under those conditions.

I was going to sell my old car, but due to some of the reasons above, I'm leaning towards keeping it.

Think about it.
