I'm flying there this week for the Tokyo Auto Salon, and will spend the following week hanging out doing whatever. Is anyone else from Prime planning to attend TAS? Does anyone have any other suggestions of stuff to do while in Japan?
If you get a chance and want to sight-see I HIGHLY recommend a visit to the city of Kyoto. There are hundreds of very historic temples (some of the oldest structures in the world) and its one of the few areas in Japan where you can still see geisha and maiko in traditional kimonos. You'll need a couple of days to see anything there - you may want to sign up for a guided tour. Honestly, I like Kyoto much more than Tokyo. Tokyo is too much like any US big city.
Of course there is Honda's Twin-Ring Motegi race complex, museum, and driving school.
In Tokyo you may want to visit Akihabara (hundreds of electronics stores in one spot!), Shibuya (the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world), Harajuku (a trendy hangout), and Ginza (like Japan's version of Rodeo drive). You could also get tickets to see a Kabuki show. Oh and last but not least take a trip out to Asakusa and the Sensoji temple - there is a huge shopping area at the temple where you can pick up all kinds of inexpensive souvenirs (inexpensive in relative terms of course).
