With VIS do you think hood pins are still nessasary?

But figured I'd also post it here.

You could even get by without hood pins at all.

Mine fit very well and was very secure even before I put the pins on. The only reason I did was because I track my car so I want the extra protection.

Attached is the picture of where to mount the latch posts. This location will line up perfectly on the hood.

Jim borrowed that pic from our extensive library of installs. (actually it's from the candy cane car hood pin install)

Please note that ALL production "CF" or fiberglass or combo CF/FRP hoods are 2 piece "sandwiches" and can delaminate into those same 2 pieces after some years of exposure to the sun and vibration and etc and ALL composite hood manufactures recommend the installation of hood pins to make sure that the top does not fly off at some point and bounce off your windshield at 100MPH. etc.

Those of you that drive garage queens to and from the car show waxoffs might not really need to do that, but if you track the car etc it is recommended.

I've had my car with the VIS hood at up to 167 mph without noticing any movement on part of the hood at all. So I don't expect any problems there.
However, as MJ already stated, since the hood is a laminated product it seems to be possible for the layers to separate. How often this happens, I have no idea.

hmmm...interesting.

not trying to be offensive, but VIS is well known for producing knock-offs(replicas), I thought they're just another shady company.

I'm kinda surprised how they actually make high quality stuff.

Well knock offs are what the prime world revolves around ya know. Ex:

Downforce, Procar, Rota, Vis, Seibon, GT-One, SOS, Dali, etc etc with the Type R hood being the most copied. Someone makes a copy of something.

VIS was actually barred from entering Tokyo Auto Salon

Just carbon. (from them)

To really save a significant weight % over the OEM (since it is already aluminum) you would need a 100% CF bagged piece like the Procar or RTR units, and even then it will just be a 5-6lbs savings. Your car will have the same handling improvement through weigh reduction effect if you just go on a diet.

However hand layup CF/FRP combo hoods are the right price, and with behind the rad ducting they will enhance the cooling flow while also reducing the air pressure under the car...

I've been in the industry for wet lay CF products and their nothing more than a layer of fiberglass skeleton, thin layer of Carbon fiber backed with fiberglass (hence the stretched threads) and topped with a coat of automotive clear coat.

This is not to be confused with dry carbon products used in race cars, which many consider to be real carbon fiber. Dry carbon adheres to a totally different process which is vacumm sealed and air tight; having the tinsel strength of titanium. Wet lay CF is as strong as a the fiberglass supporting it.

I echo the sentiments other member have already stated; get your hood pins. Mod safe

I lost my hood once awhile back. Flew up and back and off at 70mph. I got distracted and forgot to re-latch the pins. Dope! Good test of those JGTC aerodynamics it shot 12 feet in the air. Luckily no damage.

From what I hear it happens all the time.

Street or track secure those hoods, trunks, and other flimsy panels and find a way so you don't forget to get them buckled down. Do not depend on those riv nuts they can and do pull right out all the time.

I know some of you don't like the look of pins but forget aestetics... that thing fly's off and causes an injury accident you'll be responsible had you not taken reasonable steps to secure it.

End rant.
