VIP Style refers to the modification of Japanese luxury automobiles to make them more fashionable and even more luxurious. VIP Style are typically large, expensive, rear-wheel drive sedans, though automotive enthusiasts use other cars like minivans and Kei cars. Once associated with the yakuza, VIP Style modifications now are a subset of automotive modification.

It is claimed that VIP Style came to be due to the risk of jap gangsters riding around in high-profile European sedans. The attention could either bring about police action or retaliation from rival gangs. By using Japan domestic market cars with modifications associated with the creation of limousines, gangsters could avoid detection by the police and rival gangs.

Both Osaka street racers and Kanto area Bosozoku gangs adopted VIP Style in different ways. Osaka street racers, after suffering numerous police crackdowns on the Hanshin Expressway in the early 1990's, turned to sedans after police targeted sport compacts as a way to cruise while remaining incognito.

what do you guys think of this new style of tuning? originated in japan and it is known as a more "grown" way of tuning a car.

after im done with the nsx, whenever that will be, if ever, im thinking about getting a 98-04 ls400 and going VIP with it like the following

01.jpg

Yeah. That seems like a real good way to avoid attention.

I'm curiuos and since you seem to have a solid knowledge of this style,,,what is the history or reason that the rear tires are undersized for the rim, meaning the wheel edge is way beyond the tire edge:confused:Also is the wack -camber and toe in done out of necesity because of the hydraulic susp or is that a desired affect on its own:confused:

The tires are stretched to allow them to fit in the stretched wheel wells. The camber is set like that so that when the car is raised by the air suspension it corrects it self, and to allow the widest tallest tire and rim combination on a car that can get the lowest. Its nothing more then the ‘’VIP’’ look they are after. Nothing performance related about it. Its a fad that was started by the european aftermarket years ago that is just know catching on in other foreign markets. VIP is an off shoot of the DUB culture.

Airbags + Chrome + Deep Dish + 4DR Black Sedan = VIP style

Looks like no one cares about offset, camber, or alignment (poor cars):frown:

I've always like the VIP style to a certain extent.

I like pictures #5 and #11, as well as the white LS460 on the freeway shot.

Both of these statements are incorrect.

yeah uh cuz if I was a cop I wouldn't pull this car or ANY car that looked like this over:confused:

Those SC's are still one of my favorite cars of all time. The 98+ GS's have a great style as well. I considered VIP'ing my LS4 but I was too cheap.

To each his/her own but that's not my thing at all.

I love VIP of "Bippu" style. I don't agree with the OP over its origins. I don't think it was created to avoid attention from cops or rivals. In fact, its create to send the right sort of message to others that whoever is in the car is "well connected".

I'm not all for the balls out caricature looks in some of those cars but mild mods, subtle lines and maintenance of some class is my idea of a proper vip ride. I've built up a 92 Legend, 2002 IS300 and now my current M3 (all not traditional vip cars) to the VIP look, but try to maintain some sportiness as well (an idea shared by Junction Produce's sports line).

This is my favourite bippu car out of all the ones currently out there:

I'm a huge fan of the LS460. I'd take it over an amg.

I see that Cheech & Chong have moved to Japan.

Just looks like the ridiculous low rider modding done with a non-US flair on Japanese makes. If you live in So Cal or visit often, you know that this is nothing new.

I think Toyota Aristo/Lexus GS works well w/ the VIP style. Some of that JP stuff is really nice. If I had the time and money, I'd do it to my Gen II Lexus GS.

I draw the line at Vans. I mean, it's a Van. No matter how much you fix it up, it's still a Van. It's like putting make up on Rosie O'Donnel. You can't hide it, may as well save the money and go au natural.

I love VIP style.

Im sure it wont be take on here so well because of the big differences.Obviously no 1 on here will be wanting to ride on stretch tires anytime soon along with having beyond aggressive wheel fitments.Just like no 1 on the VIP forum would wanna have a 285 on a 10in. wide rim over having a 245 on it.

Instead of just going straight to hating I do give props to all kinds of car modifying from vip, tuners to lowriders.Even though I dont like Lowriders enough to build 1,i can appreciate their MASSIVE attention to detail.

But anyways i'll quit ranting.I have never owned a real VIP chassis but I did have my ES300 vip styled with Work Euroline DH's.
