Valve Adjustment - Mileage, or Age?

I'm a little bit confused as to when a Valve Adjustment is required.
It's been 10k and almost 3-years since my last V.A. Is it due?

I believe that the valve adjustment schedule is based upon milage only. The issues which need to be addressed w/i time intervals involve rubber parts, such as hoses, timing belts, etc as they deteriorate over time regardless of use. The manual specifies the rec'd milage interval for valve adjustment--I think it's every 15k miles. However, some guys on Prime question whether they need to be adjusted that frequently if the car is not raced and only used for normal highway driving.

I've been told it is strictly a mileage-only adjustment.

I've also been told by several very good NSX techs that 30K miles is the absolute minimum for a valve adjustment and that lightly/non-tracked NSXs are perfectly fine until 60K.

I purchased my car in April 06. I did the valves with 99k miles on the car. I would be willing to bet that they hadn't been done since the 60k service. I didn't adjust any of them enough to make any difference. If the valve train doesn't have any inconsistient noises, I wouldn't worry about it. Listen to the engine at idle after it is warm. Are there any ticking noises that are louder than the rest? If so adjust the valves. Now this job is a real pain in the ass. It took me 45 minutes to do just the adjustment, remember there are 24 valves. That was with the top end already opened up to do the timing belt, add an hour to get to that point, and then an hour to put it back together. I'm just guessing that a dealer flat rates a valve adjustment at 2.5 to 3 hours. Who knows?

Data Point:

I did an adjustment at a ~40K interval on a 106K mile engine. Only one valve was not "measurably perfect" and that one was still well within tolerance. I adjusted it anyways, but it was almost pointless.

After reading a lot of stories like this on 'prime, I would only recommend that a valve adjustment (verification really) be performed when the valve covers are off for some other service (timing belt, cam plugs, head work, etc...) or if your engine is running rough/missing.

IMHO a near complete waste of time otherwise, the NSX engine is just amazingly well engineered. Save your efforts for something more likely to need it...
