TYPE "R"
So, they key words in the Motor1 article are allegedly, speculative, and rumors........ Additionally, this author wrote the same article a year ago announcing the new type R as early as 2019, and used the same picture as the article he wrote days ago.

So hopeful wishes or more BS? It is possible if not plausible that Honda may actually do this. And after a leak to the public I can see Honda denying the claim. Why would they want a leak to spoil their own grandiose plans to unveil the car down the road???? Chevrolet denied the existence of the C8 Corvette for years, even after thousands of pics and videos of the prototypes were all over the internet. Time will tell.
But the potential release of the Type R raises some questions. It is rumored to be priced at $200K. Is this base price or loaded? Will it pork up to $225K with options? Wasn't one of the original problems with the car the fact that no one on earth was willing to pay $200K for a Japanese supercar? Will an 70 HP increase make the car sell 100 per month with a $200K+ price tag? NO! If the haters and naysayers all get their wish come true (careful what you ask for ) and the car has 650 HP, no motors upfront, rear wheel drive, and it's $200k, do think these folks will run out and buy one? With this new "spec" you' think that the car would have the HP needed to at least reach the magical 200 MPH range, which will surely garner lots of press attention. But the reality is, how many people have ever or will ever drive their car 191, much less 200mph???? And how many current Gen 2 oweners are going to trade their new car in to a dealer for $120k and then cough up another $80K for this added top end that they will never experience??? Very few I'm sure...... The other issue I see is that, even with the reduced weight and the loss of the front motors, there is no way, in my speculative opinion that the R car will be able to match the current hybrid car's 0-60 time. It's the whole electric set up that gives it this awesome acceleration ability...... To launch the car with 2 wheel drive you'll have to reduce the HP to avoid massive wheelspin by kicking out cylinders or adding clutch slippage.......
Question: Had this R version of the car come out in the beginning with 650 HP and rear wheel drive, how many current owners who got $40-50K rebates would have bought it???? My guess is very few....... The haters would still hate it, and the naysayers would have said it's too expensive.......
And if you think sales are dismal now, wait until the offer this again at $200K, sales will plummet once again. But maybe Honda will keep offering $30K rebates???
But, it's a HALO car, and it's purpose is to show what a manufacturer is capable of doing. Maybe, with a relatively minimal effort, they can produce this type R variant that perhaps they should have brought out in the first place. Doesn't matter to me though. I think that my 2017 is an amazing car. Very fast (fast enough for me), interesting and unusual, but amazing technology.
One last observation. I watched a TV show a couple of weeks ago about Honda Motorsports and it's really quite amazing at how deeply involved (and successful) Honda is in global motorsports. They are involved in Formula 1, Indycars, IMSA, prototypes and the NSX program, Formula feeder programs, carting, and who knows what else. This is NOT JUST a car company that builds crossovers, far from it. They are as heavily involved and invested in racing technology than any automotive manufacturer out there......
I'm going to keep mine for a while........ Will be interesting to see where it all ends up. Just my 2.5 cents worth.
