Trunk latch problem

Didn't find anything in FAQ about this; I am experiencing problems getting my trunk lid to latch, and when it does the dash warning light stays lit showing unlatched trunk. I'v played around with adjusting the lid catch, but no dice. Is this a failure mode for the lower part of the latch? Thanks guys! This is a 91, buy the way.

A problem with the trunk opener solenoid might the culprit. It's on the left side of the trunk just behind the antenna. Check the connector for possible corrosion and give it a spritz of WD-40 and see if that helps. It could also be a bad trunk opener switch in the door that's stuck and sending voltage to the solenoid all the time.

But try this first.....

For a really quick test to see if the problem is electrical, open your glve box and turn off the main trunk opener switch on the left side of the glove box. This will prevent voltage from reaching the switch in the door and the solenoid. If your trunk still isn't latching properly, the problem is mechanical and the latch mechanism might need to be replaced.

Remember, the indicator light on the dash is for the glass engine hatch, not the trunk:).

Hugh, following your suggestions to elim. the electrical side, it does look like a mech. problem. By re-adjusting both the latch, and the strike, I have it working again- but went thru this same routine in July, where it will work fine for months, then refuse to latch. May be the lower latch mech. is feeling old. Thanks for the help. Tom

You're welcome. I spray all of my car's latches, hinges and swivel points (trunk arms etc..) every 2 to 3 months with a little blast of aerosol white lithium grease. Good preventative maintenance.

That I'm sure does not happen very often. I consider it an honor to correct a master of knowledge such as yourself. This now gives you the priveledge of wearing the now famous pink dress and wig at next years's NSXPO! Perhaps we could do a duet?

Now that's just a little too over the top for me:).

Fine then, you want to be "Presidential"? I'll hire Monica Lewinsky to hide under the podium when you give the gala dinner speech.
