So boyz, she let loose last nite on the way home from work.
It was coming soon since I had a release problem we where trying to figure out with LarryB at Nsxpo. She was sticking and took a few sec to release like something was keeping those twin stock disk attached for a bit. Anyways, I punched her at 5000 rpm in first by my house and I broke out a set of springs in the first disk, thats the one nearest the pressure plate.
Called my brother Eddie (NCC-1701D)and he came over with a Prelude full of tools. Not that we needed many to strip out a Trans. Couple pickle forks and a salad bowl, not to mention the Lengstrom 7" Gangley Wrench.
Three hours later we where starring at the troubled disk and a part that we can't figure out what it is that was in my mid plate.
Not sure if Mr. Low Boost Whipple got this thing down or it was my driving! I'll take the hit for LarryB's on/off throttle thrashing of my car at Nsxpo.
Must be nice to ride on a cushy jet with a baby coughing in your face while the rest of us hit the dusty road with a can of Red Bull by our sides.
Set them up, I'll knock them down he says, I was thinking he was talking drinks not my car!
Ed retired for the nite after we surveyed the aftermath and I cleaned up a bit as I planned my morning attack.
I hit up Shad and Bob first thing over at Driving Ambition. Those cats I knew had a O.S. Giken twin disk street clutch kit and I was going to get it.
The email and call went out and bang.......I was in business....Full kit on the UPS jet with a set of Dif. seals for good measure.
Now the waiting begins as Usa and Canada don't seem to talk well with freight. Hopefully things come in tomorrow and we can slam this baby together. I even got a torque wrench ready to hold open the door if we need more light. The previous mech didn't use one, so why should we!
I'll clean things up after work today and take off the old flywheel, you know a clean car is a happy car.
Just have to remember not to clean seals so I don't pull out the springs. Ratz!
Will update as it progresses dudes.
Enjoy
Trev
p.s. Note the tools we used for the process, the rice cooker is in the left hand corner behind the microwave. The silver serving dish in the right corner was not hurt in this process. Might use it later to lift trans in place.

Post on thing in my plate.

Trev,
Sorry to hear your clutch took a "DUMP". That disk looks just like the one that came out of Myron's car.

If you will remove the four bolts that hold the upper "A" arm on the left side and completely remove the whole assembly it makes life a lot easier when you go to put the tranny back in. Don't forget to replace the engine rear main seal while you are there.

Is the "Mystery Part" metal or rubber? If metal, is it steel or aluminum? Do you have another tranny input shaft to align up the clutch disks? Don't forget to brush on Honda Hi Temp grease on the clutch disk splines before putting the clutch together. Is this your first clutch replacement? If so disregard all after, "Do you have another tranny input shaft........."

Window shade guy!
Thanks dude, Its Ed's fourth clutch in a few months so he is getting good.
We always can use some good tips.
Well just throw the trans on my back and ill lift it in place and Ed will shove me in the direction that it has to go! lol
The piece I found is a precision piece of steel and I can not find anything else like it on the car. It looks so familiar but I can not place it. I looked at another oem clutch to see if I could find anything like this, but nothing. Well, I guess it doesn't matter now, but am relieve I know why i had 2 months of crazy clutching.
Nice talking to you again.
Trev

Howdy, heard about the stock discs doing that, John at Acura of Brookfield says most times damage is done on downshifting if I remember, not hard upshifts. We talked about all this as I put in custom clutch stuff when I had him put short gears and R&P in my trans. What make and model scissors lift are you using? I don't have room for a post type lift in my garage, but didn't seem to be able to find a scissors type with low enough collapsed height or capacity for the whole car. Maybe now I have. Thanks, Tony

Trev,
Just a thought. While you have the tranny out, could you weigh it? There is an ongoing debate about "How Much Does a Tranny Weigh". If you have some bathroom scales handy it would be greatly appreciated. Kilos or pounds, either one will work.
Thanks,
Brad

Sorry to hear about your mishap

Its not common, but it happens. The clutch is a wear item.

Sorry to hear about your clutch, but man.... you have rust everywhere?!

Henry.

That's not rust, its clutch disc dust.

I would believe that the mystery piece is part of the pressure plate (the springs on the PP pivot on the machined ring). My guess is this part broke first which due to the tight tolerances between the discs and PP, the piece contacted the disc and broke the spring.

Thanks guys, ya, thats just clutch dust dudes. Lots of it.
I have looked in and out of that pressure plate, almost even x-rayed it and can't find where that little piece came from. Oh well.......
The new clutch flew overnite and I am just waiting for it to show up at my door.
Hopefully we can get some hours in tonite, otherwise sat morning early.
I will weight the transmission tonite and post results.
Let see, I weight 140 lbs.... so...
davidf.......that disk is not just about worn out. Its well within wear limits with life on it.
Even a new disk looks like its worn out from the untrained eye.

9 stones...

Done! Thanks Ed, Shad, Bob and Warren - the guy that says "oh you missed that bolt, oh and that nut" - but didn't get his hands too dirty. lol
She hooks up now boyz. Wal-mart all seasons goin ta get ripped up.

Congrats if you finished the install.

Which version did you get, race (high HP) or street/race? And is the clutch an on/off type or you can feather it in case one has a steep driveway?

Trev, you have to use the peddle on the right to rip up tires

BTW: you should have made the track days the intermediates had 7 cars  it was like driving the car on your own personal track day.

I bought the street version I will call it.
The STR-2C. The two stands for twin disk. C is the diameter.
It sure is not like the stock clutch at all.
Number one, It might be easier to depress the pedal with their wild change up kit that give you a new slave cylinder that is in a reverse mounting cage that pulls on the new fork assembly that you bolt in place of the old fork.
I would suggest I have to bleed a little more before full comments.
I have almost stalled 5 times. With this unit, you do not blimp the throttle like the stocker. Just let it out at idle.
It grabs fast, but looks like there is room to feather, I'm just not use to the grab down low as we know the stock grabs up top.
The midplate seems to rattle when the clutch is pressed in and I'm not happy about that. I will hold off on complaining for a week, maybe she needs a little wear and some clutch dust!!! lol
First person I ran into today in the parking lot said, you have a little rattling going on there. It did not make me feel very good after spending lots of money and time.
Anyways, we will see how it goes as the days pass.
Thanks
Trev
p.s. Maybe some one can tell me exactly what the instructions say. (Translate)

Sorry Trev but no fix for the "Floating" center disk when the clutch is pressed in  same with the Exedy. Just tell people you put an Italian Ducati clutch in it

told you about the O.S. noisy clutch , only gets worse with use but its a great clutch .

the broken part from your stock clutch is a part which commonly breaks on oem clutches and exedy clutches (same manufacturer)

OLDMNSX
1 stone = 14 lbs, at least in official British units. At 9 stone (126lbs), that's heavy.

My '64 'vet Muncie 4-speed weighed about half that. I used to pull that simply by lying on my back on a creeprr and doing a "bench press, then roll out from under the car with it on my chest. Looks like I'll need a different technique or will need to eat a lot of Wheaties when my NSX clutch goes.

Glad to see you have it all back together.

I wasn't the one wearing latex gloves

Any extra bolts, nuts left over??

Very cool to see the replacement proces in action. Thanks for that.

Yup, same thing happened to my stock clutch. Never happens! yeah right. pity because i still had a lot of kms left on the clutch.
anyway, you know the story...

Well, here is the word, I'm real dissappointed with the noise from this thing.
This is not a street clutch for a daily driver.
This is a race or track clutch only.
Who could bare to listen to this noise on the street.
I drive my nsx everyday, everywhere.
I have been laughed at, criticized and feel completely like shit.
The list of rude and shitty comment I have gotten so far is too long and hurtful to mention.
Otherwise, this is a wonderful clutch.
It grabs nice, not to fast that you can't handle it.
You can slip it up a hill if you need to.
The pedal effort is next to stock.
Just takes a little getting use to after driving stock for 4.5 years.
I am waiting a week to see where the noise goes before wanting a full refund, never mind the 8 hours of my life and humility!!! lol
Here is video with sound of the clutch disk when the pedal is pressed in for your viewing pleasure. Would you drive this everyday in public?
This is two disk and two plates with load and no load.

p.s. It actually sounds like there is a two alarm fire in the elementary school thats across the field or the Bank of Canada just got robbed around the corner.

hi Trev --

Sorry to hear about your OEM clutch disc going. The damper spring's cage most often breaks under fatigue when the cage starts to hit the flywheel bolts from wear.

That OS clutch is nice, but is designed for race use. I don't know why they call it a street clutch. It's the same basic setup as the Exedy twin disc design where the floating midplate chatters when there is no pre-load from the pressure plate. The friction medium's coefficient of friction (how sticky it is) is very high. If you ever decide to change, you may wish to consider this setup:

cheers,
-- Chris
