Tomorrow, I'm an owner!!!

so how did you insure it on the way home? do you have to buy permits for every state you enter? I am thinking of doing the same but I am unsure about the drive back without insurance etc...Thanks.

Insured it up here just like any other car. It still has a registered Texas plate on it until the end of May and I haven't had a problem yet, but I am getting it off as soon as I possibly can.

SO it was still insured by the previous owner til end of May? I am confused. How does it still have a texas plate? Or did you insure it before you picked it up?

Most times, the US owners will be able to provide a temporary plate for you. It is valid for up to 60 days. You have to call your insurance in Canada give them the VIN and they will insure your car. So you are responsible for your own insurance.

In ontario (I don't know about other provinces) you cannot insure a car that is not registered in Ontario - if you call and give them the VIN and they don't ask, (they just assume its an ontario car) yes, they'll give you a binder - but if you have a claim and they look into it they will deny your claim. The first thing they do if the car is stolen is ask for the ownership...

If you hear otherwise - GET IT IN WRITING!!!

Now I am really confused. I am thinking of importing from the States as well and I Would like to drive it back to BC.

So , How do I insure the car through the States without US address. CAn I bring my plates with me from the car I drive now and have the title from the Previous US owner? Can I use a US temporary plate from the prveious US owner? ANyone with detailed info would be great..How is it done guys? Thanks.

When I drove the MDX back from Colorado, the dealer there gave me a temporary licence plate valid for 60 days. It's basically a piece of paper that they taped onto the back window. They don't insure your car. You have to get insurance from your own insurance company.

So you call your insurance co. and tell them the VIN. They will pull it up and say you want to insure <insert vehicle description>. You say yes, and then you tell them the date that you want the insurance to be valid. Bring the pink card with you and you should be good to drive back.

I just thought of something. Do you have private insurance in BC or is it govt? We've got private insurers in Alberta.

Yeah, just thought about it now. It could be different provinces have different requirements. I just drove up an MDX in Feb. It was pretty simple. I called insurance and they said go ahead and drive it up. They didn't care that it was a US car and they didn't care that it was not registered in Canada.

I had insurance on my car before it being registered in Ontario, when i drove it up from the states...Mine you it was just basic coverage. So yes it can be done in Ontario.
Differant Insurance companies have differant rules.

State Farm just offered me full insurance on the car until it's in Canada, as long as I don't "drive it around for a while before coming home". I do, however, still have to get it all in writing.

In BC we have provincial insurance so I have no idea how to insure the car if it's not yet registered in my name when I pick up from the US.

I purchased a car in Vancouver and drove it back to Calgary a few years ago. You will need an intransit permit (I think only valid in Canada). You can get this from any insurance broker. This includes insurance and temp. registration. You will need to know how long you what this permit to be valid for (start and end date). The longer the costlier.
Please also note that after you pay GST 7% + 6.1% duty you will also have to pay PST 7% at the time of registration. If the CND value of the car is above $50K, the provincial sales tax is bump up to 10% on the ENTIRE price - it is NOT prorated on the portion about $50K.
In Alberta there is no sales tax. The Alberta advantage.
