Did any of you get a note from Acura for your TL to check the transmission? I just got a note in the mail yesterday to bring it in for an inspection and possible replacement of the tranny.

I didn't get the note, but I was aware the 3rd Gen Auto TLs were part of the recall group.

I expect they will install an oil jet or replace the unit. It appears the problem with the automatics is a lack of cooling.

Do you know if this includes the '05 TL? :frown:

haha. I like the "yet" part. Just wait for the 05 recall. It will probably be coming soon.

I can't believe this problem is still going on.
Honda should absolutely be ashamed of themselves. My 2001 cl type S transmission was replaced 3 times.

It's not even just the TL's and CL's. It's the MDX, Pilot and Accord. Those are all I can think of right now. I know there was also an issue with 2nd gear grinding on the RSX, but I don't know if an official recall was ever made.

Honda is pathetic. You would think they would have done their homework. With all the tranny issues- and the fact that most Acuras/Hondas have the same tranny, I have been advising my family members to buy toyota's or Lexus. sad, pretty sad.

My 02 TLS is on its second tranny now....first one went at 18.5k miles second one was around 29k. They will do the oil jet and give you a new ecu that will tame the cars torque a bit.

There was a thread on this a while back. Yes, Honda has had alot of problems with their 5 speed automatics. The previous generation 4 speed autos were not that great either. I have and Odyssey and a CRV both with the 4 speed automatics.

Two things can be done to extend the life of your transmissions: one, add a large transmission oil cooler. A good one will lower the operating temp about 50 degrees. Heat leads to failure. Second, lock the transmission out of top gear until you are on road will you will maintain 55 mph or more. This prevents unnecessary shifts, again reducing heat in the trans.

Ah yes! I forgot about the infamous 4 speed auto triptronic trans in the Prelude. Add that one to the list as well. They would probably still be having problems if that car was still made.

My girlfriend recently had a new transmission installed on her '02 TL-S. Depending on the severity of the damage, Acura will either 1) installed the oil jet kit as previously mentioned, or 2) replace the existing transmission with a refurbished unit. However, neither fixes actually address the real problem, without going into further deal it's better to just head over to www.acura-tl.com and read through the stickies.

Yes, acura-tl.com is a good site. They also have RL, CL and other sections as well. There are several trolls there, but over all it's an informative site.

On this latest issue with the 04-05 TL's. Is it just that auto or are the manuals having problems too?

Re: TL Tranny recall? Should I buy my CL?

My 01 CL typeS has had the oil jet installed about 2 months ago. The transmission has not shown any visible problems to date. The car is coming off lease in a few months and I'm considering buying it.

Do you think I should forget it because of the transmission issue?

If the tranny is covered under warrnaty, and if they'll repace it at no charge to you if something happens downthe road, then I see no reason not to buy it off the lease.

Re: TL Tranny recall? Should I buy my CL?

Came from the mouth of Honda Engineer themselves. If the tranny start with H, they suck.

That being said, Honda has been building their own tranny and developing their won fluid. I guess they have not perfected that skill yet.

Toyota and other manufacturer usually uses tranny from tranny manufacturer like getrag and so forth.

Thank god I bought a TL 6spd!!! Because of the issues I have heard about I wouldn't ever have bought a TL if the manual wasn't offered.

As much as I love Honda. I would recommend that people looking to buying a TL with an automatic should learn how to drive a stick. If they really want an automatic for commuting or some other reason then they should look at another car.

I hope the new RL has no issues!!
