I'm in the mood for another drive but this time the "focus" (pun intended) will be on a route that gives us great opportunities for stops that offer nice group and individual photo ops. The road should be fun too, but roads where we can stop at photographic places should have priority.

Anyone know of any places like that? Give me the places/landmarks and I'll try to put together a route that includes the best of them. I guess we can stop for lunch somewhere too.

If we have a good showing I might also try to bring some video equipment and see if we can't put together a short clip including all of our regulars and I'll edit it and post it to Prime via YouTube. Just a thought.

It would be great to take pictures at some of the places listed but difficult to take the time to "pose" our cars just so. I'll keep looking for places in addition to these.

Keep the suggestions coming

Maybe someone who reads this can help me with something kinda related but not really...

In a car club that I used to be a member of, one of the members put together a photoshoot on famous Lombard street, "the crookedest street in the world". He arranged to have traffic stopped for us and we all lined up, bumper to bumper on the street while a few members snapped the pics from the base of the hill, across the street. I've forgotten the details about how he made these arrangements but I seem to remember that the residents who live on the street were involved and got paid. Each person participating paid something like $25 or $40 or something. Small price for such an exclusive shot.

Anyone have any idea how I should start investigating how we might do this for our club?

Do a Big Sur drive. Steve organized it a few years ago, it was a blast and there were lots of photo ops.

I am definately interested, when where, and how bad the roads are to get there have a big impact on how/if I go (w/ or w/o lip :p) I have always wanted to do a industrial style photoshoot like old rusty mills and stuff like that and qrafitti type stuff always looks good as a backround

Are you talking about my neighborhood?

OK. I just spoke with the people at San Francisco Film and Video Arts Commission. They are the group responsible for providing premits for photo shots on Lombard Street, the Embarcado, Golden Gate Park, AT&T Park, etc. She told me I was the third person in the last two months to call her from a "car group". She said they had a shot the other day with 135 Smart Cars on Lombard Street, parked double wide and it was fantastic. She also mentioned that it's a difficult photo shot and might require a "cherry picker" or access to the roof top of a resident. She also has the information for such residents to avoid the cost of a "cherry picker".

The fee for a permit is $100 and need to have an insurance policy of $1,000,000 naming the City and County of San Francisco for the day. Need to hire a police officer for traffic control for Lombard and also make a "contribution" to the people that live on that street because the people that live there maintain the street, not the City of San Francisco. She has the guy's name for the contribution for all of the home owners and he does everything. I said I heard the "contribution" was $25 - $30 per residence and she said that was about right.

She is also going to send me a suggested list of locations for photo shoots in San Francisco.

This has the potential for a FANTASTIC opportunity for a photo shoot, but if you folks agree it has potential, I would suggest it be expanded to the Sacramento group as well. Might even want to suggest we hire a professional photo person because these could be priceless photos.

OK. Back to you...

Doug, thanks for making that call. The information you found mirrored what I found online, for the most part. I found a thread for the Saturn Sky guys (and gals) and their total out of pocket for each of I think it was 30 or so cars was only about $35. This included the insurance, pay for the police service, and the $100 fee for the permit.

Based on the thread I read, it appears to be enough room for about 20 cars per photo and because they had so many cars they took two separate shots and were able to distribute their costs across many members, which is something we'd be able to do as I think this could really be a memorable event/picture.

Doug, run down what you can/want, and I'll do the same. Then you can hand-off to me or we can work together to see if it's something we can do.

PS The Saturn guys had people who were coming in from as far as Portland, so we may get a lot of people who want to do it. If we scramble to do it and can actually do it soon, we may be able to coordinate it in such a way that people caravaning from SoCal on their way to Expo can maybe participate?

Maybe we can get some "support" from local Acura dealers if this turns out to be massive.

I don't think it would be that expensive if we have enough that participate. $100 for fees, insurance couldn't be that expensive for a day, payment for a police officer for traffic control, etc.

Photos = priceless

The thread I found of the Saturn guys ended up being about $40 ea or so. I don't know what the cost breakdown was, but I figure it's a good ballpark. I think that it's worth it if we even get it for double that because, as you say, pictures are priceless.

I'd be in, although do we have enough time to do it before people
leave for Xpo?

Also, are weekends possible, or only weekdays? Do we get to control the area, so there won't be tourists in the background of the photos?
