Well I was certainly impressed. And how my paint could use some real attention. I've tried a lot of things but tonight's demo was the best and easiest I've seen. He was right about the cost of the buffer. Ouch. So I cheaped-out and went to www.toolsforless.com and just got the Porter Cable version for a $114. Autopia also has a nice kit deal for more $. On the good side of making sales for Meguiar's, I'll be using a lot more of their products.

Good meeting, Steve. Good to see everyone.

Thanks,

t

The Meguiars guy last night said that the Porter Cable equivalent was a model # 7335. Looks like you guys have linked to a model # 7424.

Other than a couple of bucks, anyone know the difference? Any advantages to the # 7424?

Dave

Question?

Tank:

Thanks about the meeting. You guys make the meeting GREAT!

On the buffer, does it come with all the pads and everything? I agree with Dave that is a different Model number.

Groits Garage sell the 7335 without pads for $179 (with a plastic case). The pads are $11 to $13 each.

Did any of you go to meguiars.com and check on their kit? Maybe we could work out a group buy with a discount!

I will go there and see.

I couldn't find a difference other than the 7335 was listed as a "sander/polisher" and the 7424 just a "polisher." All the other specs seem to be the same. ?????

The lowest priced 7424 comes with just one basic polish pad. You'll have to buy the other pads separately. There are car detailing sites that offer package deals on this polisher with a full range of pads but the costs start to approach that of the Meguiar's.

Looks like the model 7335 is a 5" buffer/sander, and the model 7336 is a 6" buffer/sander. Also the model 7424 is a 6" model.

If they're all the same except for the head sizes, then maybe the real issue is the availability of replacement pads, and a good assortment. Meguiar's sells 6.5" pads, so maybe their's has a custom head? Griot's Garage sells 6" pads, as an example, which might point us towards the model 7336 or the 7424.

Any comments, or better yet, first-hand experience?

Dave

I have the model 7424. Besides size, I think there is something to do with counter balance weights. Someone at Porter Cable can best explain the difference.

That said, this is a great tool. I bought the velcro adapter head from Griot's so that I can use their orange and red pads to apply liquid wax (Zaino, Nanowax, NXT, 3M, Zymol liquid, etc. I have also used Griot's Machine Polish 3) but I remove all products by hand. I use the orange pad on my other cars and the red pad for the NSX. After use, I work laundry detergent into the pads and rinse very, very well. They come out like new and I have been using the same pads for a couple of years. I have replacements on hand in case the foam tears or shows other signs of wear but so far so good. They don't list the velcro adaptor in their catalog, but if you ask they should have it available. It screws right on and, of course, it fits their pads.

Obviously, this is a lot more expensive then most buffers on the market but I'm glad I spent the money. If it is possible, you might consider asking someone that has one to allow you to try it out.

I tried using the 7335 at the demo and i pressed it against the paint realllllllllllllllllllly hard and nothing happens to the paint!!! just amazing...needless to say, i am going to get one and ............. start using it. I am glad I went to the Demo........I sure learned alot. Now I think I can really wash my car ......properly :D

Hey Norm, nice to hear from you.

I tried out the #7335 at the meeting last week. As Pooh said, we we were all pretty impressed. Good to know that the #7424 will work with the Griot's pads, as will the #7336 I suspect since it too is a 6" buffer.

For those of us who were unable to attend can I get the recap of the Maguires presentation? I apprecate it.

A little research on the web tonight shows #7336 at $108 and #7424 at $115 (including shipping). I sent an email to Porter-Cable tonight asking them to explain the differnce between the two models - I'll report back.

Gil: The Meguiars rep demo'd some detailing product, but when he fired up the P-C buffer he really got our attention. He let us try it out on a demo hood he had set up and like Pooh said, we couldn't hurt it. Then Dave deGraf pulled his car up to the side door and the rep buffed out a small section. Even in poor lighiting, we could see an immediate difference.

Here's the response I got from the folks at Porter-Cable regarding the differences between model #7336 and #7424:

>Thank you for visiting the Porter-Cable website.
Models 7336 and 7424 are the same tool. The difference is which accessories are included with each.<

It looks like the #7424 is the way to go, and the best price I have seen is $115 including shipping from Toolmarts.

Anyone have any additional information?

Dave

HOLY SHIT! What a link - thanks pt91. That has got to be the most thorough product review and related posts that I have ever seen.

Bottom line to all this is that the model #7424 is fine, but the writer recommends buying a 6lb weight to go with it.

OR, just buy the model #7336 which comes with the 6lb weight.

The model #7336 is availabe at my local Lowes store (Rancho Santa Margarita) for $109.

As I said earlier, I bought the 7424 which should be here any day now. I have the rest of the products in hand.

Soooooo.......

I say we have a paint shine showdown at the next meeting:D :D

Gentlemen, start your polishers!

How about if we have a details and polish party instead. That way we can help each other do it!!! I can volunteer my place if needed. :D

So I spent this past weekend polishing the car. With a cutter pad and M3's Dark Car Swirl Remover, the 7424 did a fine job. (I clayed the car before starting) But the 3M product certainly didn't live up to expectations. My neighbor with his 911 Turbo joined me in a polish-off. Same polisher, different product. He used Safe-Cut. Neither of us were really happy with the results.

So we both tried Meguiars Cleaning Wax as was used in our demo, and, I have to say, it worked a lot better. It got rid of most of the swirl marks, was easy to use, and even easier to remove. Unfortunately for me, my paint is so deeply scratched (it came that way) that polishing only did so much. The paint itself has never looked better and the car looks dead-wet at most angles.

I'm very pleased with this Cleaning Wax.

Andy,

I would just carefully read over all the above posts. There are several options available to you. Some cheaper than others, some maybe a little more beneficial to you, etc. I don't know of a group buy. But either model of the Porter Cable polisher will do just fine for most folks. You can get the velcro adapter disc from most detail suppliers and then use any kind/size pads you want.
