The Best Gasoline brand for NSX

fogcitynsx, for my educational purpose, how does one know if the gas was a "bad Batch" i'm guessing possible decrease in take off,bad idling, or possible cow shake. How did you determine that it was a bad batch that you filled. thanks

Because its costco lol. I would never use costco or sams club. Dont take the cheap way with the nsx. I agree that most gas is all the same with each company putting their own little things in here and there but never costco, It messed up the fuel in my rx7 as the previous owner used it from time to time.
Oh, and I use mobil. My gf only uses 76 as its the official fuel of nascar lol.

It's the same gas, except I read long ago that Arco wasn't. They just add different additives like has already been pointed out. I haven't seen any scientific evidence as to which additive is better.

I've had bad gas from Mobil and Chevron and I could imagine it can happen anywhere else. My two least expensive gas stations are Mobil and Chevron where I live but they don't seem to be any better than the more expensive ones. I have no solid facts to back up anything I say, just personal opinion. :) My best MPG fillup I got was from a Vons gas station.

+1.

The bigger companies the more expensive they are, it does not mean their gas is better than others. I have used Costco gas for my daily driving, I never have a single problem with my truck. Before I change the oil, I fill up 91 Octane and add concentrated additive.

I found it interesting that Kwik Trip and QuickTrip are top tier gasoline retailers and that QuickTrip guarantees their gas. I'm sure I've read that while pumping gas, but never thought that much about it.

Interesting thread...

On BP, I'm not sure about other locations, but here in Omaha, NE/Council Bluffs, IA area they had an article in our local paper about the local BP stations.

The article noted that the owners of the BP stations were independently owned, so boycotting the stations, hurt the owners of the stations and their employees and didn't affect BP the corporation.

I found that interesting... I'm not quite sure how that works.. I would think if the station was using the BP name and trademark that they would be more closely related.

I only purchase premium. I've purchased gas at Quicktrip and Kwik Stop for my NSX. I believe Shell also.

I used to own a 1968 Volvo that had SU Carburetors. As long as I used Amoco premium (clear gasoline) they would never get fouled up causing the carburetor pistons to stick. I drove that car over 60Kmiles on Amoco clear gas. After most of those miles I replaced the fuel gauge in the gas tank - the inside of the tank looked like new, no sediments. Around the same time I had to pull a gas tank from a Volkswagen bug - the gas in that tank poured out like muddy water...

When I used anything else I had to often clean the carburetors.
Granted this was Amoco gasoline from 30 yrs ago :-)

What do you use now?

I always thought that if you dont drive your car often, try to keep the gas tank full as much as possible since empty gas tank tend to have water condensation, which will affect your gas line by adding water to it. Thus, I try to keep my tank 3/4 full as much as I can...
Anyone on Prime know if this water condensation is correct or just another fib...

This is just my opinion but the fuel system on any modern car is completely sealed tight. From tank to injectors and tank to carbon canister (fumes). Gas caps are even required to be vacuum tight. Significant water isn't going to get in the tank unless I put it in there, or there is a major leak in the fuel/emissions system.

Was the VW tank rusting out maybe? On mythbusters, they didn't empty a bleach solution from a fuel tank and it left thick muddy sludge just after one night. The tank was clean prior.

BTW I prefer Shell or Chevron gas.

Hi Prime,

I searched on Prime but did not find any thread on this topic. I was just curious if anyone has any opinion or fact about which gasoline brand is best for our NSX or any sport car for that matter. As there are many types of engine oils, is there any difference in gasoline we use....

Warm regards,

I've never given it a second thought, I just fill it up when it gets to "E". The last year, I've had a BJs membership so I usually fill up there.

As fuel is nearly identical between brands (same source) I only choose newly built gas stations and stay away of those who's tanks have been filled up lately. I don't want the junk messing up my fuel filter.

Say guys on the issue of fuel - I hear from a guy, not an expert mind you, that premium gas doesn't have ethenol in it? As in 93 Octaine - anyone know for sure?

Been running this in all of my cars for years and never lost an engine or had issues:

I've used costco in the FD and never lost an engine to it.

I've lost 2 engines to Chevron.

76 is another high quality gas that the MKIV folks seem to like.

I stay away from Arco.

want to know whats funny? My friend's father used to work at a refinery here in California and he said that trucks from Arco, chevron, etc all came to the same refinery and filled up with the same fuel. The ONLY difference? The couple ounces of additive added to the THOUSANDS of gallons of fuel per truck.

that is true and i've got the same info from a good source.
majority of companies use the same basic gasoline and, like stated above, they mix-in 'proprietary' blends of detergends and boosters. think about, how would you control whose blend of gas is going through the pipeline at what time? impossible.

best advice so far, especially in wet climates where the water will get into older tanks.

I believe I saw a sign saying that Costco guarantees its gas, just like anything else you buy there. In our DD we use Costco and no problems. The lines to get gas can sometime be a problem, especially if you are in a hurry. I do throw in Chevron on long trips and every several tank fulls of Costco. When I run Chevron on those long trips I do notice slightly higher mileage.

Best thing about Costco is you can return anything there. I like to fill up a trashbag on the end of the exhaust and exchange for some Kirkland shampoo. I just tell them the gas wasn't quite right...

And what one of you guys is in such a small town that you know when all the gas stations refill? Geez that is just a little obsurd isn't it? I mean I know it's nice to go to new stations and most that I got to are new but when they fill up their tanks??? I mean what do you do - go in and ask? Debris in the gas - anyone replace the gasoline filters in their cars? Some of this is just a little bit funny. I mean how long do you think it might take for debris to settle out in gasoline - we're not talking about oil for crying out loud. Tip - it's not days....

I've been using gasoline for 44 years and I've never had a problem due to debris in the gas - ever. The only thing that should scare any of us is the use of ethenol. Moisture - ethenol. Highest octaine you can get. Some areas of our vast country have more ethenol issues than others - right! So if anyone is reading articles about gas, this is what you pick up. Like others have said all this gasoline flows thru the lines - how does it get separated for BP, Shell, Texaco, etc? Wouldn't think that is possible. Additives perhaps after the fact but adding a thimble full to the tanker - geez. I'm not sure I know what to think anymore about gasoline.

Wonder how much control we really have and for that matter if it's all coming thru the same pipe lines - what's the difference between the cheaper gas and the more expensive gas? Although I still won't use Citgo and I just don't like Arco's way of doing business. It's a crap shoot and ethenol is BS!

This. "Top Tier" is recommended by Honda, and if it's good enough for Honda, it's good enough for my car.

Very curious that BP wasn't even mentioned? Amoco gas has always been good I thought? Mmmm is this still current? Sunnoco isn't mentioned either? Peculiar.

LOL. Of course, when you are on a free way you will get higher mileage vs. stop and run locally.
