Hi, I have been trying out my car's wet handling last night, and I found out that the pump does make that grinding noise every time the ABS is activated.

I read the FAQ, it said it's normal for it to work in that fashion, please excuse my poor reading skill, but I just need someone to clarify it for me:

So, Everytime after you brake and enable the ABS, the noise will be there? Everytime?

I just felt weird, cuz I had never driven any car doing that before...

Thanks.

hi

The ABS pump is activated by a pressure switch monitoring pressure in the ABS accumulator. When you use the ABS system, high pressure brake fluid in the accumulator is bled off to provide the hydraulic force to override your braking inputs. I guess if ABS only came on for a very brief instant the pressure would not drop enough to trigger the pump on, but if you are using it for a second or two the pressure switch should turn the pump on to keep the hydraulic pressure up. It seems normal to me.

Along Briank's line of thinking, does the ABS pump come on nearly everytime you start the car, and when it comes on does it shut off after only a few seconds? These are also possible indications of a failed accumulator.

I had couple times it actuates when I start it in the morning. But it usually just go away in couple seconds.

The noise came up right after the ABS activated... I don't think the noise ever come up when I was still in Braking though.

What I worry the most is that the previous owner had that Blue brake fluid in the ABS cyclinder. And I remembered that Honda never recommend any fluid other than the honda brake fluid in the ABS system. (At least for the case in my Accord, CRV, TL.)

It sounds like the brakes are operating properly.

Not true. Honda specifies what type of fluid (usually DOT 3 or DOT 4) and not a particular brand. You can use any brand of brake fluid in the NSX and other Honda/Acura models.

The DOT regulations specify certain colors for different DOT ratings of brake fluid. However, I know that ATE makes its DOT 4 brake fluid available in two different colors - blue and gold - so that you can tell when it's all been flushed. There's nothing wrong with ATE blue fluid.

Your dealer/mechanic should be able to test the boiling point of your fluid...
