temperature guage

A couple of days ago I took out my instrument cluster to fix burnt light bulbs and after putting back the cluster I turned the car on for 5 minutes and the temperature guage went to over heat but yet the car doesn't seem to be over heating in such a short time idling, I turned on the heat fan and cold air was still coming out, could I have damaged something in the cluster, I did play with the guages alittle bit to clean inside, any suggestions as to what could be wrong or how I can repair this problem?

I did the same thing ... removed the cluster for cleaning etc. reassembled it all and installed it only to find out my gas guage did not work.

After checking eveything electronically, ground, fuel sender unit etc. careful inpection of the guage itself showed that one of the copper bind wires on the back of the gauge that grounds to the mounting screw broke in half. This wire is almost as thin as a hair.

I do not know if I broke it with my finger or tightened the mounting screw and it turned the wire and snapped. Nonetheless, I managed to solder it back togther with alot of patience and the gauge worked again. Has been operating ever since.

Hope this helps.

yes I did unscrew the gauges from the pcb board does that make a problem

Yes, it might have done, as xory72 describes.

The plastic of the gauge becomes very brittle over time and doesnt have the strength to hold the the studs in place here you put the crew on, result is they twist, breaking the wires.

If you have to resolder the wires, be aware that there is insulation on these wires, though they look like bare copper.
