TCS Button Stuck

TCS Button

The TCS button behind the steering wheel right side, does not have a detent to it. Is it suppose to "click" in and out? TCS idiot light on instrument cluster comes on and goes off at start up of engine like it should. The green light on the TCS button is on sometimes and sometimes is flickering but is off most of the time. Should I try to pull button out???? Thanks

Wswen

The TCS button has no detent, what should happen is each time you push it in the light toggles on/off. When the light on the button is off you should see the "TCS Off" light on. The light on the button should be on after every start, the TCS is allways on untill you push the button and then it stays off untill you turn off the car or push the button again. Does your TCS work at all ? It's sounding like you have more than just a button problem, review the service manual TCS section here in the FAQ's

Braink,

I think what wswen means when he says "detent" is that the button is spring loaded(or was:)). It sounds like your TCS button is mechanically broken, either spring gone, plastic cracked inside, etc.

I have not had occasion to remove one yet.

As Brian suggests, Go Here: http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Reference/1991_svcman/1991_svcman.htm
Page 20-44 shows the instrument panel out and the TCS switch (Sequence #12)

In another post there was a discussion about the instrument panel and that it can be a little stubborn to get out. I would do a search to find that thread.

The part number for a new TCS switch is 35300-SL0-A02 for 1991-94 cars. Change the suffix "A02" to "A03" for 1995+ cars (ODBII may have caused a change to this switch)

He is not getting the TCS OFF light except on start so I am thinking there is some kind of malfuction in the TCS system on top of the broken / damaged button. What came first the chicken or the egg.

I am assuming Wswen is using the Dictionary definition of detent.

detent

SYLLABICATION: de·tent
PRONUNCIATION: d-tnt
NOUN: A catch or lever that locks the movement of one part of a mechanism.

TCS Button

Is there a spell check in this forum? The TCS button will not "click" in or out. I can not turn off my TCS. The" TCS off light" comes on when the ignition key is turned on and then goes off with all the other instrument cluster lights. I just got my car two weeks ago, I will see if the traction control works the next time it rains. Since it is an automatic transmission does that make any difference? Thanks

TCS computer disabled?

If you remove the back cover on the firewall behind the driver seat, you should see the TCS control box with three connectors. Perhaps the previous owner didn't like TCS and unplugged it so he doesn't have to flip the switch everytime. It's a longshot but worth checking.

Another possibility is the connector on the switch side got pulled away. This happened on mine when I took my gauge out to get the ring painted. Easy fix, just push the connector on the TCS button side in. Not the connector connecting the two connectors.

I will stick with my original comments. You need a TCS switch, JMO. Your switch is mechanically broken.

BTW: $67.64 for the TCS switch (the A02 version 1991-94) from www.hondacuraworld.com and I am sure Neillo, GUNN, and any of the NSXCA discount dealres will offer about the same.

hey....this sounds too strange. If you do some searches you will find some of my posts with the same problem. I couldn't turn my system off. The button didn't work at all. I just fixed it 3 days ago. I had to take my dash appart, the switch was not plugged in all the way. I pushed the connector in all the way in and it fixed my problem!!! Do the searches, and find my posts, I bet we are having the same exact problem (well...I'm not anymore :) )

John

I had the same problem as well all it was is that the cable was unplugged.Just remove the two screws that hold the bottom cover look up behind the dash by where the TCS button is and make sure that the cables are plugged in all the way...

Can I throw in my problem here as well? I've only had my car for almost three weeks and I just noticed that my TCS light(s) doesn't come on at all when I start my car, actually it looks like there are two or three of them...? Well none of them come on, and the button wswen is talking about does nothing on mine either, no led light comes on when pushed either. It pushes fine and does the clicky sound, but it doesn't cause a light to activate or shut off no matter how many times I push it. Any one have some suggestions on where to start on this one? I have noticed however that when I do start out aggressive in first (not dropping the clutch or anything, but getting going and then gunning it) I have yet to squeel the tires. I haven't even gotten them to chirp yet, so it makes me think that it is working, but maybe no light on the dash???
Hopefully some of the technosavy can help me here....

Well I've done a search on this subject, I think I will wait til i get some rain and have some wet roads and see if i can induce some wheelspin and see if things light up on the dash (i should see a green blinking light correct? If I don't get that, what should be my next step?

Keep in mind I still don't have the on/off switch working yet...

dnyhof,

Your issue is different. It sounds like your TCS system is disconnected, disabled, or not functional. Do you have aftermarket wheels on your new ride?? Different wheels/tire diameters can screw up the TCS. Maybe the previous owner had this issue and just disconnected the system.

Oh, BTW, in jadkar's case, the TCS switch DID "click" mechanically, but just did not deactivate the TCS properly, so I think his symptom is different:)

Larry,
I agree with you that I think it is a different problem. I do have aftermarket rims on my car and am trying to get ahold of John Vasos at Acura of Brookfield to see if they have done anything since that is where the previous owner had it serviced. I've also got an email in to the previous owner.
The wierd thing is it isn't like I'm getting anything blinking or check engine lights like there may be a problem, it's just that the light doesn't go on once I start the car (and then go out one sec. later). I really would just like to know why it's happening, I'm not necessarily feeling I need TCS since I've never had it on any other car.
