Targa Top Leaking

To start, I never drive my car in the rain - unfortunately, I was caught in the rain returning from a nice drive, which started with clear skies and sunshine. When the rain started to come down I was immediately upset but what can you do but get home, unfortunately this was not the worst of the problems. The problem started when I hit a stoplight and while waiting a stream of water started coming in at the front passenger side seal for the targa-top. After getting home and drying the car, I removed the roof and found nothing out of the ordinary in regards to the seal being bad, not sure what else to check here.

Anyone out there have any ideas what it could be or what else I need to look into before taking it to the dealer and blowing a lot of money? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

try using some shinetsue grease on the seals and see if that helps.

If the weather strip looks good I'd say try putting on the t-top gain and make sure its seated properly.

When I bought my car, the previous owner told me that if I didn't get the top on 100% right it would leak. I've never had a problem, and I've been out in insane downpours, but obviously he did. I would take the top off, and put it back on. Maybe get someone to help.

I also use the shinetsue grease.

So do you also put this stuff in the two holes where the prongs from the targe fit into?

Check to make sure someone didn't tuck in the top of the body-side weatherstripping just as it bends into the roof area. On the driver's side I did that getting in/out of the car, didn't notice it, and got soaked under the same conditions. I simply pulled/pushed things into place with my fingers and all was well again.

PS: I regularly wipe on/off a very thin film of Dow-Corning silicon grease (lab-use stuff) on all rubber weatherstripping. I've been doing that on all my cars for nearly 35 years with excellent results. Most of the weatherstripping on my '84 Corvette (105kmi) is still original and in good shape as a result. I can only assume that ShinEtsu is pretty similar stuff.
