Most know I plan to be a NSX owner in the next 6 to8 months but it seems there are alot of 308s on the market at nice prices. I know the Ferrari will cost 4 times to run as compared to the NSX. I have always wanted a 308. Help talk me off the Ferrari 308 ledge before I go and do something I know I will regret. But those sure are good looking cars......please help me.

They "are" nice looking until you get up close. I have always loved the 308 as well but I have gotten a closer look at a few examples while at Euro Sunday events and I was disappointed. I had held that car on a pedestal for so long and then was able to compare it to an NSX build quality wise.

There is no comparison. The NSX wins hands down.

Magnum P.I. kinda shit LOL

the car i think looks good, then you look at the factory rims and think wow Ferrari must have ran out of funding during development LOL uggglllyyy

+ 1 on the 360, Like you, many of us could get a 550, 348 .. or the 308, my only advise I can say is that, if you plan to put 15K miles on a former/retired supercar that still looks great, get the NSX, if you plan to put 2-3K miles on those great looking classic Ferraris that sound like heaven, got with the old ferraris.

If you want a slightly better car (that can be subjective), then get the 360, otherwise, just stick with the NSX (na2 if possible, since you are on the 40-50s budget), get a proper coilover suspension setup (it changes from great to bad-ass handling) .. a more aggressive exhaust (like pride with test pipes = heaven) and you will be smiling from ear to ear, and on top of that you'll be able to drive anytime you want!!!

Oscar

PS: Still the NSX can expensive to fix, don't get fooled, get a clean example!

If I am going to get a Ferrari, it will be at least the F355 and up. The 308/328 were beautiful in their days. They now look so dated that you have to be at least 50 years old or more to look right in that car.

308? What is the problem? If you want a 355, that is a toss but 308? A Civic Si will kill it.

Best advice I every got when it comes to deciding between cars is someone told me I had to DRIVE them.

Drive both cars and see where your feelings guide you. You may find that you're not as happy with the NSX or with the 308. Who knows? That being said, please post pictures of both cars and reviews for the next torn Primer.

+1^ RIC

My vote is 2002-2005 NSX-T

Plus they made sooo many 308/348 kit cars from Fieros. That after spending the money on the F car, you might say "I would've saved a lot of money buying a Fiero"

You can't beat an NSX for the style, price and exclusiveness.

I'm agreeing with YOU. NSX? Ferrari? Of course the Italian has more rank. I dare anyone dispute THAT. However, they manufactured them in large numbers really. You just don't see many because everyone cannot afford it. Now, on the other hand, more people could afford the NSX, but guess what...it was manufactured in MUCH fewer numbers so you still once again don't see many. Hence, there are a few great proud owners.

I would only get a Ferrari 360 or newer... it will still be more expensive to maintain, but it will be reliable at least.

Honestly, though... don't get an NSX because you can't afford a Ferrari... get an NSX because you like the NSX.

If you ultimately want a Ferrari, nothing is really going to fill that void except a Ferrari.

A Maserati can be had for around $20k... and you get a Ferrari V8... but clearly since you are looking at a 308, that isn't your interest.

Old friend of mine had a 308, beautiful classic car but a serious maintenance whore. Consider this---people will look at the 308 and go, "Nice old Magnum-Mobile" but people will look at the NSX and say "I always wanted one of those."

I prefer the latter comment.

Very well said, can't be said better in fact.

Personally, I have never lusted over a Ferrari (closest one being an F50 but still, there ain't no lust), been surrounded by too many of them.

I would find myself in lack of personality by buying the typical Ferraris, hence I didn't.

Have to disagree with pretty much every comment here.

Honestly, I think its healthier to not buy things based on how you think others perceive them, BUT... NO ONE looks at the 308 and says "nice old Magnum PI mobile" and then looks at the NSX and is somehow awed. I mean come on. I love the NSX, but 99% of the population have no clue what the hell it is. MOST people recognize the 308 as a classic Ferrari. This argument is silly.

As for a Civic Si beating it. Who cares? Thats another ridiculous argument. A Civic Si can "beat" a Jaguar XKE also. A new $25k WRX comes brand new with a warranty and can annihilate any NSX that hasnt had $20k in mods in *everything* from a technical standpoint, so why arent we all just driving WRXs?

The 308 is a classic car. The NSX is also, but the 308 is even older.

The question of "should I..." is HUGELY subjective on a classic car. Anyone who immediately jumps to measuring *any* classic against current cars is, IMO, kidding themselves and destined for disappointment (that includes the NSX). Its why you see people on this very forum so desperate to figure out how to benchmark the NSX against a new Z06 (sort of laughable)

You buy a classic because you love the experience of *that car*. In exchange, you have to accept it for what it is.

If you get in a 308 and think "oh crap, this feels OLD!" and you look at it and think "oh man, this didnt age well!" or you drive it and say 'woah... my CIVIC is faster" Well then the 308 is NOT FOR YOU.

I can tell you now that many of my friends think Im insane for owning a CTSC NSX when for the same money I could own an endless list of cars that are *far* quicker, more modern, and handle better. But to me, the NSX puts a smile on my face like no other car does (with maybe some exceptions ;) )

To the OP, THAT is the answer to your question. If the 308 *speaks* to you more than the NSX, thats what you buy. If the 308 just feels old and dated (and you NEED to be honest here), but you are looking to try to gain some sort of artificial "I have a FERRARI status" (and MANY do this also with the roughest, cheapest, NSXs), then you are making the wrong move.

+1 great post

For me this is stunning

but so is this

Again, If i had a 308, I know i'd be happy, yet, I'd drive probably 10% the amount of my NSX and not even 50% as hard as my nsx ... so, that's why I have chosen the Honda, of course I wish I could have both! :)

mlambert, I agree with 99% of your post. However, I have experienced the very reaction I relayed in my post so for you to say "NO ONE" says that is short-sighted. I'd go as far to say that if it wasn't for the exposure given by Magnum P.I., the 308/328 would primarily be known to car enthusiasts as the entry level Ferrari of that era, particularly when the Mondial ('80-93), 512i Berlinetta Boxer ('81-84) and Testarossa ('84-92) were available, not to mention the 288 GTO in '84. It's obvious you feel differently there so we will have to agree to disagree.

I'm not saying that the 308/328 isn't a wonderful car because I think it does "speak" to a whole lot of us on some level. Hell, I swore I'd have one until I laid eyes on the NSX for the first time. That put paid to THAT dream! Tastes & opinions change. However, I would just suggest to the OP to do his due diligence on Ferrari ownership like with this article here and in the end, do what feels right to him, be it a 308/328, NSX or whatever. That's all that really matters.

If you do buy a 308 do your homework on which particular year has which particular issues, and which year started the quatrovalve, which years bubbled paint on the rear valance ect ect..

Best advice I every got when it comes to deciding between cars is someone told me I had to DRIVE them.

THAT above great advice...and HONESTLY answer yourself the question, "WHY am I buying?"

Do you want the "I achieved a landmark goal...I own a FERRARI" satisfaction?

Do you want to simply own something that will make others envy what you have?

Do you want a sexy-as-all get out, fun-ass-hell sports car?

How important is reliability to me? How much maintenance can I afford to deal with? How much work can I do myself?

You could even think about it terms of "What car would I choose to drive if I were the last person on Earth...ie: there would be nobody to ever see me driving it or know I own it? What would truely make ME the happiest?"

For the record: I have previously owned an '81 Ferrari 308 GTSi and driven numerous NSX's...one for a week when the 308 was in the body shop for a minor body repair...and currently an NSX to car meets & shows on a regular basis. I know both cars very well.

I ALMOST traded my 308 in for an NSX...but I wanted them BOTH.

I sold the 308 planning to move to a 355, but that got put on the back burner for awhile due to circumstances. Currently looking to get an NSX, then get a 355 down the road.

In a nutshell, they are both great cars...it, again, boils down to "why do you want to buy?"

Also, check out FerrariChat.com for opinions...they even have a recent good thread going about the NSX:

PS: You're really not going to find anyone here to help talk you out of buying a nice sports car...either one.

You'll have to visit the Prius forums for that. :D

Oscar, can you Photoshop off those ugly ass Ferrari rims?

those rims on that ferrari makes me sick to my stomach

uuuuugugugghhhhhmmmmm. then you hear a distinct sound

" quuuuiiissshhh " ( a toilet flushing )

the 308 looks awesome but the rims kill the car

+1 on the gunmetal 02+ rims bad to the bone

then you look at the factory rims and think wow Ferrari must have ran out of funding during development LOL uggglllyyy

I have zero clue why you think they are f-ugly wheels.

The Ferrari five-star wheel design had been around for a long time and used on many of their models...they are iconic...and look great on that car.

What would YOU suggest on such a car? I've seen aftermarket wheels on 308's, but very few seem to fit the style of the car.
