Swine flu what's the big deal?

I just read this:

"King County has enough Tamiflu on hand to treat 190,000 people infected or exposed to swine flu."

(That's the county Seattle is in).

Just to be clear the "flu" virus or any virus for that matter does not have teeth, fangs, nor claws. It has a outer membrane with paterns of protiens/chemicals that allow it to pass through the walls of our cells. It then incorprates its dna/rna into our own cells replication cycle to produce more virus particles. What is "mutating" is the pattern of these membrane chemicals.Thier is random variation with each new virus particle, the "winning" combo is the one that our bodies' defenses have never seen before, thus no early immune response is mounted, and infection is rapid, that is all.Viruses don't think, don't plot, they are an exsquisit packet of dna/rna that have evolved:frown:

That's actually a very good point. It's easy to mix words when discussing this.

I just found out that two kids in my home town of Oxnard, have tested positive for swine flu. The kids are 9 and 13 yrs old. The schools have have been closed and the treating clinics are being disinfected.

I also read that 2 Marines at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twenty-Nine Palms, CA , have tested positive for swine flu. They are quarantined to their barracks room at the moment. 25 other Marines that have come into contact with these 2 Marines, have been restricted to the facility and are prohibited from going anywhere public out in town.

I also think that people are overreacting to this. No swine flu out here in NC, yet.

All I know is it is the forecast is nice and sunny, so I might have to call into work with the swine flu or whatever it is called tomorrow morning.

Sounds good. I like it.
