Where do you go for an oil (etc) change?

I should do all my fluids since I'm driving on last fall's...

I'm thinking of Mobil One 15W50 and a Fram or similar filter - what do you do?

I am still under factory warranty so I'm thinking of Brant Acura - any other thoughts?

Fram
[RWI] I used Fram once with disasterous results. About 4 years ago, I decided to change my oil one Sunday. Unfortunately, no Acura dealers were opened on Sunday. So, I ran to my local Pep Boys and puchased myself an equivalent Fram filter. Did my oil and filter change as usual and went for a test drive. After about 20 mins driving around, I decided to take it to about 100 mph. Guess what, my oil presure dropped to zero and one of the idiot lights started blinking.

I immediately shut the engine off and assesed what had happen. There was smoke coming from the rear right side of the car but not on the left. Believe me, it was a scary experience. I was almost in tears while I pulled off the side of the road. I got out of the car and saw a trail of oil on the road leading up to my car. I remember praying as I carefully peeped under the car. First thing I noticed was the car's left underside was very clean. I decided to jack up the car right there and then so I could see more underneath. Further examination revealed the Fram rubber seal burst spilling most of the oil out of my engine.

I told myself then, I will never ever use a non-factory filter my my NSX again. The next day, I took my car to the dealer and had them checked everything in my engine. Fortunately, the dealer said the engine has no detectable damage. It took at least 3 under carriage steam cleaning before I got all the oil out of the little crevices under the car. The moral of the story, don't skimp on oil filters, use the oil filter specifically designed for you car.

[DNG] Fram oil filters are know for this. Frams were banned from being used on race bikes since they kept blowing. I'd rather spend $4 more for piece of mind with the OEMs.

Honda recommends 10W30 and 5W30 would be acceptable in your cooler climate. I've even heard of 0W40 being more accepted than 15W50 in Mercedes Benz circles. Any reason you wish to use such a heavy weight of synthetic engine oil?

As far as replacing other fluids go, I suppose it depends on miles, last replaced, type of driving (ie. track, auto-X, etc'...). Read-up on the NSXPrime FAQ's & particularly the "Maintenance" section...

Thanks for the heads up on the filter!

I'm thinking of the heavier weight and higher temp rating 'cuz I'll run hard and hot (especially hard for short trips 2-3 miles to and from work) and I'm thinking it will provide better protection.

Now, I'm used to german engines, is the NSX that different?

hey stu,

i only use Motul in my nsx and my other cars...

as for the shop i only use Speedstar... speedstar.com

they are incredible and know only high end japanese and german cars... as soon as my brakes come in, i'm headed there to do my suspension and brake upgrade....

check out their website and tell them nathan sent you

Hey Stu,

Honda filters only. I started with Honda oil then went to Redline... there was a great sale on Redline products last year at CT and I stocked up for 2 oil changes.

I'm still looking for a good Acura shop as well to bring the car in for more complicated maintenance. Otherwise, I try to do my own fluid changes when possible. After watching Mike at Autowave do my coolant, I'll probably let Acura do that until I get the right tools...

Another decent place is Gilman's. Dave has taken his car there as well. Raymond at Gilman is trying to get me to try Motul. I'll give it a try after I use up my Redline...

Gilman did my coilovers and alignment and although its a dirty shop, for that kind of thing I would use them.

Id also reccomend Erin Mills Acura (Allen has done some good work for me recently).

Hey Red, I've used Mobil 1 Synthetic 10W30 and nothing but the NSX OEM oil filter. The filter usually runs you $15 bux, and oil around $40. Make sure its the correct filter you get from the dealer, sometimes that filter is mistaken for a Legend or some other V6, the NSX filter is longer in size. I do my changes myself, dealer usually throws in new crush washers with every oil filter I buy. I suggest going to the local Dealer, heard good things about Erin Mills, and Brant. The oil change on this car isn't difficult, I'm sure any good shop can change the oil.

If you want to do-it-yourself see here (I really like draft #2): http://www.danoland.com/nsxgarage/index.html

And, with over 10K actual track miles on my NSX, I'm betting that my usage is more aggressive than yours... ;)
