Supra owner forced to drive NSX

veejayy, glad to hear you enjoyed your drive! I recommend that everyone drives all cars they are considering, even the ones that have odd/bad reputations. I've surprised myself on a few test drives where I went into it with an assumption about a car that turned out to be totally wrong.

As for the NSX reputation it is mostly power per dollar releated as others have said. If that bothers you, go drive a Comptech or Basch supercharged NSX. I got to drive Chromatose, a 400HP Comptech modified monster and I've never been quite the same since. Go look at Chromatose's dyno chart and a Ferrari 360's dyno plot, it is educational. If you want more power, there are options...

Of course I drive a Miata most days, so everything else seems fast ;-)

Ah! The voice of Reason.

The problem about testing and comparing high performance cars is that you will not get its true feel unless driven hard at the limits. Many sports cars have a lot of potential to do well on the racetrack, but the cockpit view the NSX provides adds excitement that few cars can achieve. Ultimately the mid-ship configuration of the NSX also provides a technical edge when tuned properly. The quick turn-in feel is also unique to midship car, but requires carefull driving style to achieve it true potential.

I can understand exactly what you are talking about. Clearly, the NSX is superior to what I drive (S2000), but when I was looking for a new car, the only two cars that I considered seriously were NSX's (used) and S2000's. Not that other cars are not as good (or better) on some fronts, but for the feeling of driving a race car, the seemingly seamless connection to the road, I did not find any others that even came close. I believe that my S2K has the same attitude as your NSX's, not quite as much car, but the same attitude nonetheless.

In the end I chose the S2K solely because it was a whole lot less expensive for the same ear to ear grin, or a whole lot newer for about the same price.

I would recommend you take an S2K for a test drive also. Im not saying that you will prefer it, but I think you may also be pleasantly surprised at the feeling you have when you get out of it after your test drive.

The S2K is definitely a good value, especially when compared to the Porsche Boxster and I have driven the S2K a few times. I just wish it was slightly roomier.

kenjiMR- I think you got it better than I did when you referred to the experience of sitting in the car. That's what first hit me- even befor I turned on the engine it was this transparent visceral feeling of being in a race car. So even without moving the experience beats most cars.

Or better yet, to have the opinions and impressions by the late great Ayrton Senna Da Silva (who helped Honda develop and evaluate the NSX while it's still in its developmental stages), that can be found here: http://www.nsxprime.com/Gallery/multimedia/acura-nsx-intro.mpg

(be patient as this mpeg will take some time to download)
To the best of my knowledge, there are only 2 road cars ever that had the exclusitivity and prestige of having being developed (at least in part) by F-1 champs of its days. The Enzo Ferrari was test-driven by M Schumacher only to be evaluated for its day-to-day drivability rather than to enhance performance potential, if I'm not mistaken. On the other hand, Senna was asked by Honda to make the NSX a better performer, and with that goal Senna's incredible analytic and communication skills helped Honda engineers stiffened the initially "loose" aluminum chasis and fine-tuned the suspension to his liking that is evident in the final production NSX. I guess maybe that's why it's such an incredible handling car that even after all these years it can still beat the newcomers in its class and even some above it.

Finally, a tribute to Senna--Bonus clips of Ayrton's incredible racing skills: http://www.a-senna.com/Video_Gallery/suz1989.mpg

Enjoy!

PS. Hmm.. what do you know, A.Tonokaboni (senna1994- anyone here?) on FerrariChat Forum http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/142254.html?1033475439 made a point about the Enzo and NSX being developed by Schumi and Senna. Coincidence indeed...As Ken stated before in one of his past posts, great minds think alike.....
