Starter turns the engine but engine won't start

I have this problem only occasionally, very frequently after a 5 minutes stop. The starter turns the engine (wildly :)) but the engine doesn't fire up, even after 6 seconds. After a second or third try it starts. The main relay has been changed last year. Is this problem well known? It started at the time after I've changed the 3 rear coils.

Could it related to the ignition switch as I've once read in the FAQ (where is it actually?)?

My friends 97 does the same thing, there was a recall on the coils if im not mistaken. When i started his car it sounded funny and the odometer jumped to 1500 then back down fast. Sounds like the ignition recall on your 91 or main relay needs replacement.

Mine is a 91 and I got 3 new coils from the US. Beside the symptom the engine runs perfectly.

You may need a new Fuel Pressure Regulator. Sometimes with age they leak down and send most of the fuel back to the tank instead of keeping the fuel rail pressurized. If there is anyway you can get a fuel presure gauge on it for a while, and after it will not start, check it while you are cranking it may tell you something:).

Thanks very much, Larry, I'll search in this direction. I don't suspect the new rear coils to cause the problem as the front ones weren't changed and while cranking the front ones should at least fire but that seems not to be the case. I may change the old rear coils back and have a look if the behaviour changes.

Maybe there is a correlation to another observation which I made last year quite often in the cold season but none of it this summer except for the last 2-3 weeks: Sometimes, actually very few times, while accelerating from low rpms to redline the engine seems to get hold back a little bit and suddenly frees its ponnies, very similar to an Integra's VTEC point but mine does this at alternating rpms (4k or 4.5k or 5k or whatever rpm) and very seldom. Regarding your recommendation it makes sense to me that there might be a problem with the fuel pressure regulator as in my observed problem the engine might get too few fuel. The fuel filter has been changed last winter with an OEM one. Could it also be a problem with the fuel pump?

Actually, what about an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator? Which ones are recommended? I know of some people who weren't very lucky with theirs. They caused strange noises. :)
