SRS/Airbag disable and steering wheel options

I have an S2000 steering wheel mounted (with cruise control) and I wanted to have the leather re-wrapped to better fit my manly sized hands and with something less slippery. I purchased the car with this set up and an NGK hub adapter was already there. So as I'm pulling off the airbag to remove the steering wheel, I notice there is only one set of yellow connectors from the bag, and that is for the horn. The other connector is dangling and its corresponding mate at the airbag has been cut at the connector. The cruise control connector is separate and working too. So I'm thinking to myself "self, you have been driving this car the whole time with out an active airbag".

The spare steering wheel, I borrowed from my buddy Eddie. It is a stock and standard NA1 with airbag. Throw this on, make all the connections and then turn on the ignition. To my surprise, the SRS/Airbag has been bypassed!

So the dilemma is this;
  1. Fix the bypass, reconnect the wires at the airbag and then get it re-leathered.
  2. Locate and purchase another S2000 Airbag with the connectors and fix the bypass and get it re-wrapped.
  3. Find a NSX OEM steering wheel, re-wrap it and fix the bypass
  4. Fix the bypass regardless. Anyone have any ideas how this is done?
  5. Forget it all and get a non-airbag aftermarket steering wheel like Spargo, Momo, NGK with a proper mounting hub.

The wife is pretty adamant about having an airbag, regadless of what I hang on too. I was leaning on getting the existing wheel rewrapped for the OEM look, better feel and protection. The upholstery shop said for the price of redoing the existing wheel, I'd be better off just buying a new steering wheel. I also have been looking at that pretty NRG Innovations Race 320mm Sport Suede Race Steering Wheel or the Sparco 353 Steering Wheel - Suede (Black). The car is mostly street (not daily) and I do enjoy the spirited canyon runs and will be doing some track events this year.

Suggestions?

Hey Ken, thank for the link. That looks real nice. But the hub portion looks to be a bit more work than I wanted to do. Appreciate your craftsmanship but isn't there something out there already fabbed up and ready to install?

Ken are you confident your airbag is indeed active and working?

Im in the process of doing the s2000 wheel and bag swap. If I understand your question correctly, you have the original NSX conector from the dash and no connector on the s2000 steering wheel? From what I understand you can cut the bag connectors on both wheels, and solider the nsx connector onto the s2000 bag. Just make sure you pull the wires out of the bag before solidering. This is what I plan to do on mine. If thats the case you could locate the connectors you need or simply crimp male and female connections on each side to make a connector for each wire. It does not matter which wire you connect but I would use either shrink wrap or get the connections that are covered in plastic so they dont short. As long as both are connected it will fire. From the reasearch that I have done. But if it were me I would try to source the OEM clips and solider them in.

I'm not sure if polarity matters but I would hate to find out the wrong way! Even if I decide to go with an airbag, I will have to try and trace the circuit to see where they bypassed it. Unless someone is aware of a "standard" bypass procedure.

Still not sure if I want to go aftermarket with or without airbag. With this discovery I just may stay with my S2k steering wheel, add Fred Biletnikoff stickum and leave it at that!

I'd recommend just upgrading to a nice aftermarket wheel which will enhance the look of the NSX, as well be much more fun to drive and track with.
I have had many setups in my previous Hondas, both NRG, Sparco are excellent quality and we sell a TON of them in our shop. I personally have the NRG/Nardi setup in my own NSX, and its much better than the oem wheel.

One more thing, with the aftermarket nrg setup you can also have a quick disconnect / detachable wheel which is great security and convenience at any time.

Removing your airbag without proper supportive safety gear is dumb IMO.

polarity does not matter. My friend owns a body shop and confirmed this and also send me wire diagrams for both nsx and s2000. I can post them if anyone wants them. Just PM me

Yes Jdmdohcpower, please just post the diagrams.

Does anyone know how most people bypass the circuit? I assume (yes, I know, very bad of me) that it is somewhere under the dash or perhaps a module is unplugged?

I'm with you guys. Was looking at a harness bar and proper belts or staying stock and resurrecting the air bar. That is why I posted in the first place.

KEN, OK you just convinced me I need to do this. Can you tell me roughly what they charged you and which parts (hub and stuff) I need to buy to make it work? Are there any drawbacks other than cost Ken? Does it tilt and telescope the same way? Sit at the same distance?

Have you guys seem Ken's aftermarket wheel? It's really unbelievable! Ken I appreciate all your help.

Also interested Ken. As to the hub, I can appreciate you building your own but does SOS or anyone else have one that you bolt on or does this have to be fabricated from scratch?

Wow, something that I can agree with you on!

What? You don't think guys shouldn't wear Capri pants? :D

JC, I have an S2K adaptor, I was thinking of going with an S2K VGS wheel. This will also work with the airbag, is an awesome wheels, and a lot lower cost than what Ken has. But Ken's wheel is just on another level:

Ok the cost was 490 euro delivered. tilt, telescope and distance are the same. I made my hub but im sure any for the NSX will work fine. No draw backs for me. Just remember if you can get a hub it is only one bolt and two wires so it is a simple Mod.

Ken what did they charge you for the install. $490? That's cheap!!! Do you have a link to the vendor and model you bought? Should I just buy that one or are there others you considered?

I think the $490 euro was for the wheel alone. It is very easy to take the wheel off and bolt another on. The trick is to make sure the spline fits the shaft.

Ken what about my old concern about trigger voltages? Are they the same? Do we know that the trigger voltage of Honda will indeed set off the bag in these? I'm sure you've figured this out, I'm just trying to learn. You have the 340, right?

They have the air bag all set up just two wires. Listen, you will have no problem. Yes I ordered 340 but you can order any size.

this was in my old post.

The Raid airbag does not have a polarity.
In other words, there is no +12V and ground, either way is correct.
