Speedo problem, check engine light on...

On the way to work this morning the speedo in my '91 NSX stopped working, then showed a little life, then went dead completely. About three or four minutes later the check engine light came on. I've read that its probably the vehicle speed sensor. My question... If this is the problem, where would I find the sensor on the car and would a sensor out of a '97 be the same?

Sorry for the question without doing some research first, but I'm at work and don't have time right now. The place next door also has a '97 NSX parts car that I could get the sensor out of if it will work.

sounds like the VSS (speed sensor) is out.

it is on top of the transmission, you can remove the air box and get to it from the top. easy job.

Vehicle Speed Sensor out of a 1997 will not work in a 1991.

You can check the code, it will be a 17 if the vehicle speed sensor is the issue.

Follow Drew's instructions to change it:).

"SPEEDO PROBLEM," don't wear them! Problem solved...

smart ass:biggrin:

2 causes. 1 is the internals wearing out.... im not sure how since there are next to nothing in terms of moving parts.

the second is your speed sensor wires are coming too close to the exhaust manifold or the stock mini heat shield is not there.

i have had problems with exhaust heating up the speed sensor wires which causes the wire resistance to go through the roof and you lose signal.

usually happens when i have the car warming up and the exhaust heat gets trapped under the car. when the car gets going it starts workingn again,or if it does not work, i just turn off the ignition and turn it back on again and it works

if you choose to replace the speed sensor, it is very easy and you can definitly tackle it yourself.

It did it again this morning on the way to work but didn't do it the rest of the day yesterday. The car also has 173k miles on it, so the third option would be old and worn out.

I'll take it out and inspect it to see if anything is obvious (along with pulling the code). $185 new at the local dealer. Not bad. I guess I'm trained to pay BMW prices.

Around $130 at discount dealers, that would include shipping.
