I can't believe how cool this little thing is! Even though we've had one in our office for about a month or two now, I can't put into words how excited I am to finally have my own.

I've been playing 5-player games of Ridge Racer in the office via wi-fi and look forward to many hours with Tony Hawk. It's like having a PS2 wherever you go. Spidey 2 looks amazing...UMD video quality is better than I expected...and I'm now recording my own videos (including my NSX videos) on Memory Stick. Too cool!

How do you respond to complaints about it being too proprietary (so they can sell you content of course), and that converting video is a clumsy multi-step process.

Does it have standard AV inputs so you can at least view other sources through it, such as a video camera?

Eric, all you need is a fashionable carrying case for that thing. Mabye one of these will work.

I think this one would look good on you.

The Exchange store on base had them out today also, $249 out the door, no taxes! I was thinking of getting one and use it as a picture viewer and mp3 player, but decided to go with an iPod Photo 30gb. I know you can buy more/bigger memory sticks, but that wouldnt be enough for me.

One of the guys in my class has had one for a while, he bought his while out in a trip in Japan. I got to play with it before it was released today and that thing is just amazing. Might get one in the future once GT4 is out for PSP

Geez, i thought that was a Platypus at first! Here's a more practical Platypus -- i bet the PSP doesn't have a bottle-opener feature. :D

I picked one up today as well, the only game I bought is Tony Hawk. Can't wait for GT4 mobile, as well as the new GTA. Both are supposed to release in April. The screen is simply AMAZING, my only disappointment is interchangeability with other sony devices. I have a Sony pda (NZ-90) and a sony digital camera (DSC-T1). I have tons of mp3's on memorysticks that I use with my PDA, but they won't play on the psp without changing the file names for the psp to access them. Also, my camera is capable of taking mpeg video, which the psp says it is capable of playing, but I can't get them to play. It'd be nice if you could just pull a memory stick out of one device and use it in another and have it work, seeing as how they're all sony products. All my pictures came up okay, however.

I got mine yesterday also! I saw it on TV 3 months ago on Stir TV, the host went to the Tokyo International Consumer Electronics Show 2004 to give us an insight of what is coming from Sony and the PSP was the best of the show. When I turned the unit on last night, I was amazed! It's the coolest piece of portable electronics I've ever owned! I've been a loyal Sony customer for the past 15 years, and I can say that they really put all their knowledge and technology into this one! Man, I would still get one even if it cost $1000 each! I got myself 3 units. (One for the car, one for home, one at work!!!) Here is a picture of what the value pack includes!

Hey Phoen$x...haven't heard from you in awhile! How are things going with you? As for the carrying case, I think simply having the PSP is enough bling for me! That said, I did hear something about a diamond encrusted and gold dipped PSP that sounded interesting...

pspblingtiny.jpg

I brought mine with me to Mammoth over the weekend with the intention of taking it out on the lifts and possibly snowboard while playing Tony Hawk ( my gig mem stick didn't arrive, so I couldn't load it up with music...but I did bring my last NSX autocross video with me :) )

PSP Video 9 is pretty cool for authoring videos. The naming conventions are annoying, but not impossible to deal with. Yeah, it would be nice if you could take video and pictures straight from your Sony digital cameras into the PSP....don't understand why they set it up the way they did, but I'll bet this will be addressed with one of those network firmware updates.

Unfortunately, there's too much glare on that glossy faceplate. I'm hoping for an after-market faceplate with a matte finish for dealing with the PSP outside. I want to be able play this thing everywhere I go!

In addition to wireless races, I've been playing through Ridge Racer's World Tour mode...some of the courses are drop-dead gorgeous! Of course, it has Ridge Racer's famous drift-physics (100% arcade)...so it's no substitute for GT4 Mobile. But the ease of playing multi-player over the wireless just adds to the fun. I wish someone would give the official release date for GT4 because I can't wait to be challenging you guys at our NSX events!

In addition to my mem stick, I have ordered Wipeout Pure, Hot Shots Golf, and pre-ordered Mercury. Can't wait for more games!

Very cool, Eric. I think that suits you! :D

How's the LCD on your PSP? I've heard Sony's been having issues with dead pixels on those things. :(

First thing I did when I got mine was look for dead pixels. Fortunately, I couldn't find any! The LCD screen is the best thing about the PSP...it's so big, bright, and beautiful!

Of all the problems I have found to date, the ABSOLUTE WORST has to be the location of the on/off/hold switch. I can't tell you how many times I've been pulling a combo in Dark Stalkers and lost power because of my palm rubbing against that button. It is the same as someone changing the channel of the TV right before the game winning/losing touchdown. Arrrrggggghhhhhh!!!!!

The feature I like best (because I thought I would never use it!) is it's ability to play movies. I am amazed at the incredible reproduction of film quality images. I never thought I would say this, but I plan on buying movies to take on vacations with me.

Now, who plans on developing a USB 2.0 feed to cary on screen images to a RCA output that can be plugged into our TV's???? Now THAT would be sweet!!

I'm actually hoping for the ability to stream the PSP's video output through wi-fi. At home, my router could pick this up and send it to my PS2 for display on my TV. Of course, you'd need software on the PSP and the PS2 for this to work, but it would be so cool!

As far as your issues with the power button placement, I too started hitting this with Tony Hawk. I noticed I didn't have this problem with Ridge Racer...I realized I held the unit very differently for each game. I simply adjusted my grip so my hand doesn't make any contact with the right side of the unit at all (the same way I hold the unit's left side for dealing with the placement of the analog thumb stick) and I no longer have any problems hitting the power switch.

Did I mention I've been converting my NSX videos to PSP format? Now I can share my videos at club meetings...whenever my gig mem stick duo arrives!

Personally, I think it is ridiculous that the PSP cannot play standard DVD's. I don't care if they want to use their own format for games, but this thing will FLOP for movies. Nobody in their right mind is going to buy two copies of every movie just to be able to watch it on a PSP.

I've read the PSP sales in the USA have been weak compared to Japan. Stores are selling only half their stock. Oh well... give it time. Also i've read the built in speakers on the PSP are crap. Is that true? I'd prefer headphones anycase.

Here are some leet developments for the PSP... looks like hackers are having fun with this baby. :)

PSP Video Converter

Hi,

I've been using the RaPiZ PSP Video Converter to convert my mpeg videos into the PSP. I notice someone mention about the PSP Video 9, is that a shareware? Where can I download it?

Thanks much!

If PSP's supported 802.11g with monitoring mode, plus WEP and WPA-PSK support and came with a suit of wep-toolz... i'd be buying one too!
And most of you won't know what i'm talking about ... but those of you that do, i bet right now you look like my green smiley here -> :D

Actually we look like this:

And this is a must read for anyone that understood Neo's jargon (read this if you didn't).

Neo, I knew what you were talking about with the exception of "monitoring mode". Since I'm too lazy to use google today, please 'splain that one to me.

...dont know what monitor-mode is... and i thought you were 1337. ;) :D :D j/k

i could explain it to you but.... i dont want to make you feel stupid. :p  :D (again i am teasing :D )

LOL, that is some seriously funny stuff you've posted. I love #6... you have no idea how often i ask people to reboot their machine and how much i hate saying it. That's very funny... i'll be sharing that with other guys i work with.

ok ok ... short explaination: some wireless cards have a "monitor mode" (usually in the form of a hacked driver) which allows programs to look at raw packets sent over wireless networks. Normally a wireless card only looks for packets destined for itself and ignores everything else. Why would you want monitor mode? It assists hackers to "sniff" wireless networks and gain access. All for informational purposes only of course. If the PSP supported this, you'd have hackers everywhere buying PSP's and "playing" them ...ahem...searching for wireless networks to access. i hope that explaination wasn't too condescending for you? :D lol

back to the topic....

Can someone make this small enough so I can use it as an avatar?
I love it! It's like a nerdy hitler.

P0rn? nah... waste of time.

Well, you might call it geeky, but when some leet haxor cracks your wireless network, sniffs all your unencrypted username/password details, is posting on prime as PHOEN$X and is enjoying free internet at your cost... trust me, doesnt matter what you call him, he's 1337 with a captial '1'. :D

D'oh. Do hax0rs have tools to crack WPA yet? At any rate, I've disabled file and printer sharing on my wireless connections. They might be able to use my internet connection, but they'll have a tough time "sniffing" anything useful as I am usually on the VPN. :p :D

Juice: just don't come to us for computer "help". :D :D
