I would LOVE to own one of those!

My favorite Skyline is actuall the R32. It is the purest skyline and it's the car that made the skyline name famous internationally. The R33 and R34 have grown too heavy and bulky. UNlike most the amazing stuff you hear about GTRs, they are actually pretty weak stock. It is the nature of their turbo engines that makes it easy to tune much like Supras. The motor is actually not as strong as the Supra motor, nor is its tranny.

I am curious about something... maybe one of you who said you'd love to own one could explain. I just do not understand the fascination with this car.. What am I missing?

My understanding of the Skyline is that the cars look like pieces but drive like maniacs. I've never driven one myself (never even seen one live, for that matter), but if it's got the performance enthusiast's claim, it's a car to be reckoned with.

I've watched NUMEROUS Best Motoring Video's where they have 5-10-30 lap races and various wet skidpad, and Autocross runs with all of the JDM supercars.
The Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec CONTINUOUSLY comes up as being one of the strongest runners. It has excellent cornering capabilities, a VERY strong motor, and very neutral handling characteristics. In most of the races that are performed by BM, the GT-R and NSX S-zero are neck and neck all the way until the end, You can never tell which one will win the race.

It IS based on a sedan platform of sorts, but is no more like the garden variety Skyline than a Prelude is like an NSX. Most of the driver's who are all quite skilled (Kurosawa Motoharu, Tsuchiya Keiichi etc etcimpressions, ) say that the Skyline IS a bit heavy, but is definitely a contender for Japan's Supercar Crown.

During the last 30 lap enduro battle they had, the Skyline was the most consistent and was voted the best car overall. The conditions for the race were that you could not exceed the manufacturer's spec's of 110C water temp, and 130C oil temp. If you exceeded any of these for 3 laps in a row you were penalized a lap.

1st heat (15 laps) 1st place RX7, 2nd Skyline, the NSX was DEAD LAST due to oil temp problems. It was STRUGGLING to keep under 135C.

Again in the second heat (15 laps) The Skyline took first, and the RX-7 second..NSX? Dead Last again due to oil temp and water temp....

After all was said and done...I still bought an NSX...ALL HAIL THE NSX!!

Sorry about the long post. btw I can try to get MPG clips of these races if you'd like...

Performance wise, I would go for R32 GTR due to its lightweight but R34 definitely looks better. There was a blue BNR 34 V-Spec which was coming from Seattle to Vancouver and I finally got the chance to see the real thing, all I could say when I saw the car was WOW. Everything on the car made me drool, fender flare, Nismo exhaust, factory Kenwood screen, factory racing seats..etc. I do agree with Mao that stock GTR isn't really fast, even some slightly modded ones aren't that fast as well. But the internal of the engine is strong for getting 1000hp and I think Top Secret Supra is using the Skyline engine parts for its Supra.

I watch the Best Motoring Videos with Edo on a regular basis. (The wife just laughs at us!) Even though I don't understand a thing that is being said, I still get jazzed from hearing the cars and watching the excellent footage.
I have to agree with Lud though. I don't understand all of the fascination and hype over the car. Don't get me wrong I think the Skyline is nice, but in my opinion it looks like a bloated Subaru. (Heavy, All wheel drive, blah interior, tall roofline, etc...)
Also, I watched the BMV that Edo talked about in his post and if it hadn't of been for the temperature requirements (some cars run at higher temperature than others)the NSX would have been in the lead. Fun to watch -but not real world in my mind.
VERY SIMPLE- for Japanese sports cars - THE NSX IS KING!

Wanna know why the Skyline GT-R looks ugly and plain-jane to some? When Nissan "created" the Skyline GT-R, it was w/ only one purpose in mind: to win races. I mean, the car wasn't designed to look pretty... Nissan had the 300ZX for that.

The GT-R won so many races in Japan that a separate racing class was created solely for GT-R's. Furthermore, until recently, the GT-R held the record at the Nurburgring in the stock class.

The GT-R has one of the best AWD systems in the world. And FWIW, a derivative of that same system can be found in the Infiniti QX4 (not Nissan Pathfinder).

Personally, I think the car is overrated here. It's definitely a fine automobile, but not at groupie-worshipping proportions. I mean, if you desire to be exclusive in the states, then the GT-R is an excellent choice... can't beat the AWD, 4WS, RHD, and it's funky look.

Cheers!

Michael.

Digging through my pic archive and I found a pic I took a few weeks ago while driving back from an import race in Joliet, IL. I must admit I was pretty shocked. I think I got a decent picture. Looks like a transformer. Sorry Lud, I like how it looks.

My friend's uncle has one. Our San Diego NSX buddy has one as well. The looks don't do it for me... but the performance is killer.

If still given a choice, I wouldn't take it over the NSX. Nothing makes me go crazy other than the NSX. Not even the new Lambo Murcielago. (I've seen one, and I've been in one... it doesn't do it for me...)

Now an F50...

I also wonder about the fascination over this car.

Sure the performance potential is there, but people can get that with the Supra.

It's certainly not for the looks... The car is pretty ugly in my opinion.

Thus I think it comes down to the fact that the car is not available on these shores. People are always fascinated with things that are elusive and mysterious.

I go to Japan often and I think because the US was denied a Skyline as a regular imported car some people here just started worshipping it. My friends in Japan says a Skyline is a dime a dozen, does not even turn their heads. An NSX however, is a car they would love to have over a skyline any day. I still don't get paying $95K for a car that's worth much much less in its home country just because we don't have it here. I rather spend $95K on something that is worth $95K.

Agreed. On my first trip to Japan a few years ago, I admit that the Skyline snapped my head around a few times because it was so strange to see them driving around.

The allure is definitely the fact that they are so rare, after seeing them enough times around Tokyo I began mistaking them for the far less exciting Impala

I also had the pleasure of seeing numerous Skyline GT-Rs in Tokyo (they seemed to be somewhat ubiquitous in the Ginza district where I was staying). What struck me about them was their size. For those of you who have not seen them in the flesh, make no mistake, these are biiiig cars. I was expecting something more along the lines of a WRX or EVO size wise, and the Skyline dwarfs these by far. It seems to be about the size of an MKIV Supra. Definitely a big and powerful beast.

as some of you may know, i'm currently in Okinawa, Japan. and yes , skylines are dime a dozen here. kinda like civics are back in the states. it is a big car, specially the R34 and i like the looks. not as much as an NSX of course. in my time here i have seen 4 NSX total. 2 at car lots and the other 2 driving. now those were eye catching. i wouldn't mind having a skyline either.

The Skyline is the ultimate car in every way!!! IMO. What other car can be all wheel drive, seat four, and have a bottom end motor that can handle up to 1000HP on stock components? SKYLINE baby!!

Plus, I think it looks soooo nice.

Lud, have you ever seen one in person?

I completely agree. I have wondered the same thing. Performance aside, it looks like every other $11,000 Hyundai/Toyota/Suburu ricer.

And, no, I don't care about ANY of it's perfomance stats. It's just boring.

Well, if you would have ever seen one live you wouldn't feel that way.

Different strokes I quess. Many feel the NSX is just an overpriced Honda with decent, exotic-like looks and little power to back it up. They fail to see the reason why NSX was created and why it is such a great car, just like you fail to see why the GT-R is a great car. It's not the looks, it's not the 1/4 mile, it is the fantastic handling and ability to get around a demanding road track in a hurry. That is the bottom line for both cars.

GT-R lacks the looks to some, then some people love the way it looks. NSX looks very good but it lacks the power. One thing they have in common, world class handling, arguably the best in the world.
