I also bought the OEM, it looks much better, and as you can see above, it sits on a lip to remain at a certain angle - when you just remove the slats and install mesh, the part will not look right.
The factory mesh is metal, held to its plastic frame by fasteners that look like staples. It's expensive, but look and fits like OEM (because it is)

How about removing the back half of the intakes including the louvers but leaving the front half that would frame the opening?

The 02+ NSX's Have the mesh vent which is the also shared with the NSX-R
Both are the same and share the same part number. Expensive though compared to the slat vent.
Not unique to the Zanardi edition, those are the part numbers for the 02+ Standard NSX and also the Facelift and pre-facelift NSX-R
