I am totally sick and tired of my job. It is really boring. Yes, I get to post on prime all day (a serious plus), but in general I am bored and have no challenge.

When my girlfriend gets a new job, I am sure I will be moving and I am thinking of changing careers.

What do you all do that is interesting, fun, challenging or all three?

Thanks

Right now I am the online director of a newspaper. I handle all the day-to-day operations and am responsible for all the classifieds products like cars.com and careerbuilder...

NetViper,

If you are looking for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career, join your local or state Police department. It is unlike any other career. After the military and college, I decided that sitting behind a desk in some office just doesn't cut it for me. Go on a few ride-alongs with the local law enforcement agencies and see for yourself what I'm talking about.

For those of you that will bring up the issue of it being a dangerous profession, think about it for a moment.....anything can be dangerous, are you going to sit at home? Even that can be dangerous, an earthquake, fire or other situation can affect you in a heartbeat.

Not everyone can handle this line of work. Just a suggestion for you to ponder.

I wouldn't give this up for anything, not even if I won the jackpot! I am proud to serve the citizens of my community. When I wear the uniform and badge, I feel a sense of pride. Para-military......

$17,000? That's it? Cost of living must be really cheap over there.

In San Francisco, we make about $70,000 without overtime and other incentives factored in......but cost of living sucks!!! Most expensive place to live in the nation I believe.

You don't care about the money, do you? It's all about excitment and pride.....serve your country. :D

Wow.. 70K is great, but the cost of living is large. It is not cheap over here, but your equivalent here would probably be 45K.. vs 17! It is crazy...

As far as serving my country... I am canadian :)

I think the solution here is to figure out what you find interesting, fun, and challenging...then get creative and build a business around that idea.

O-ace.. you need anyone to run racingflix.com? :)
LOL...don't think I'll be able to afford that :D If you thought the police dept didn't pay enough, you're not gonna like the salary :p

Yeah, but sitting at home doesn't require packing a gun and dealing with gang-bangers and drug dealers as part of your life (think LAPD here). Natural disasters happen and if that's the only extent of what is perceived as dangerous about sitting at home, I'll take that over police work anyday.

No offense, I find your profession a very respectable one, but one is going to HAVE to want to BE a cop to do it. No half-hearted desires. Not for me, thanks.

Just my O.

I too am sick of my job. I seriously need to hurry up and finish my ed-u-ma-cation!! :D

Joel,

What's so bad about packing a gun and dealing with gang-bangers and drug dealers as part of your life? I love dealing with scumbags and sending them to jail. It could be worst, imagine being over there in Iraq....

I dated this chick once that was a district mgr for about 8 video rental stores she would visit 2 a day and see how things were going, check the books, start new promo's etc and she was making like $80k!!!! www.famvid.com

My wife is an audiologist for 16 school districts. She works MWF tues and thurs off. At least 3/4 of her day is driving. Summers off, she gives hearing impaired kids FM systems, checks hearing aides etc $50k year. Not bad for only part time!!!!

My buddy's gf is a physical therapy teacher at a tech college and makes $90k

My neighbor sells fitness pills, shakes, etc over the internet globally and stocks gyms etc making $100k+

become a club racer and make negative $50K!!!!! :D

These are all in WI in which cost of living is cheap

Read the book "Who Moved My Cheese"

If you want a career that "guarantees" you a job almost regardless of the job market:

Nurse
X-ray Tech
Physical/Occupational Therapist
Dental Hygienist

These are all 2 or 3 year programs that make good money to start. Go to a community college for these programs, stay away from large private universities that charge 10X for the same degree and marketability.

you could be a police officer at UC Berkeley (i attend there now)

starting salary about 56K (most cops leave and go to SFPD or Oakland PD for more $$)

but make 56K, give tickets to students all day on skateboards. live in the east (cheap) like stockton or places out there

thus you make good money, no dangers, and respectable job

if you ask me, i say go to law school like me, and practice workers comp law :D

i second the 'who moved my cheese' recommendation. Excellent book that encourages/motivates. But not in a Zig or Tony Robbins sort of way.

Im in sales--7 years now. Previously spent 1 year in advertising and 1.5 years in retail management(same company) right after/during college. Up until my current sales career, i spent seven years in social work non-profit organization. So ive definately lived both extremes of the work spectrum.

The whole therapist/social work thing was great, but paid horrible(not as bad as the 17k police job though!!!)

The whole sales thing is Fantastic pay, but youre not exactly saving the world or anyone else.

My choice was based on the realization that when i was inside a system, that system's flaws and the boneheaded mistakes made by the companies comprising the system drives me crazy!!!

Starting my own company or a sales career were the two best choices for me. Both give you high levels of freedom and the ability to make independent decisions. Sales offers the highest pay levels in general, with some opportunities approaching CEO pay range.

So, if you know what you love and you can start your own business doing that---that would be MY first choice. My second choice would be for the sales pay and make what you love a hobby.

I would say that every time i changed paths, from retail management to social work to sales, the people i was leaving all told me dont do it, you cant do it, you shouldnt do it. Thank God i didnt listen. Every move i made was a good one for me.

By the way, the most important career is the one held by my wife. She takes care of our two little ones. After considering going back to her former 'career', she decided to change to fulltime mother. Neither of us have any regrets with that decision either.

Good luck and i hope this novella helps.
